Audio from the uncensored Australian broadcast <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to confirm this, including Rock\u2019s stunned reaction: \u201cWill Smith slapped the s\u2013t out of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So while ABC may have momentarily spared American viewers the tense Rock-Smith exchange, it quickly went viral on their mobile devices.<\/p>\n<p>Rob Mills of ABC, who was in the network\u2019s production trailer during the show, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2022\/tv\/news\/oscars-abc-will-smith-slap-chris-rock-rob-mills-1235217294\/\">told Variety <\/a>that it quickly became apparent that the incident was not scripted. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"865\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-26-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Chris Rock, Will Smith\" class=\"wp-image-21698311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-26-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-26-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-26-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Americans were able to watch an unedited version of what transpired through international broadcast clips that went viral on social media.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Before Smith smacked the comedian, Rock had made a joke about Smith\u2019s wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith, being in the fake action film <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/03\/29\/jada-pinkett-smith-embraced-baldness-pre-oscars-slap-dont-give-2-craps\/?_ga=2.260261069.1125893388.1648555021-1289197835.1641563608\">because of her bald head<\/a>. She had previously spoken about having a hair loss condition, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/jada-pinkett-smith-uplifting-black-women-alopecia-rcna11273\">alopecia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChris Rock came on and he was doing, I think, material based on what happened that night, as any comedian will do,\u201d Mills told Variety. \u201cHe made the [\u2018G.I. Jane\u2019] joke. Obviously, you could see the joke did not land with Jada. And then you see Will start to get up and walk up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mills added: \u201cThere have certainly been unpredictable moments where people have gotten up and done things, so we thought this was one of those.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Once Rock and Smith both used expletives in their reactions, it dawned on the ABC producers that this was real.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-23-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Chris Rock\" class=\"wp-image-21698330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-23-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-23-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/03\/chris-rock-will-smith-23-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>ABC producers realized that the incident was unscripted after both Rock and Smith used profanity immediately after the slap.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cYou started to realize this is real once Chris, who certainly knows the limits of broadcast standards, said, \u2018Will Smith slapped the s\u2013t out of me,\u2019\u201d Mills said. \u201cThat\u2019s when it became obvious that this was not a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Due to strict FCC guidelines on the use of profanity during domestic broadcasts, Mills said, he and his team erred on the side of caution in censoring the aftermath.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re on the button, which I wasn\u2019t but our standards people were, I think you obviously go towards overcorrection than letting something get through,\u201d Mills said.<\/p>\n<p>American viewers instead relied on clips from overseas, which do not apply the same rigorous requirements against profanity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmericans can be a bit more puritanical and outraged by these things,\u201d a radio producer for BBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/arts-entertainment\/2022\/03\/28\/oscars-slap-editing\/\">told the Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
