“#Hartley Sawyer fired from The Flash over deeply offensive tweets<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n\"Hartley<\/img>In the wake of sweeping change going on in this country, there are also big changes happ<\/a>ening on\u00a0The Flash.\u00a0<\/em>Today, The CW alongside Warner Bros. TV, Berlanti Productions, and showrunner Eric Wallace announced that they are firing Hartley Sawyer over the resurfacing of old tweets that showed a pattern of racist, misogynistic, and homophobic behavior.<\/p>\n

Here is what the following parties had to say in a statement, per The Hollywood Reporter:<\/p>\n

\u201cIn regards to Mr. Sawyer\u2019s posts on social media<\/a>, we do not tolerate derogatory remarks that target any race, ethnicity, national origin, gender, or sexual orientation \u2026 Such remarks are antithetical to our values and policies, which strive and evolve to promote a safe, inclusive and productive environment for our workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wallace himself issued a statement on Sawyer\u2019s comments, which you can read at the bottom of this article alongside an apology from the actor himself, who was first posted last week. He also vowed to bring \u201cpermanent change\u201d to the work environment on the show, including working to tell more diverse stories. This is one of those occasions where actions will speak louder than words. Removing Sawyer from the show is one step, but there is more work to be done. That includes work in the writers\u2019 room to celebrate inclusiveness, but also within the stories on the show itself.<\/p>\n

One other thing that needs to change with the show is the vetting of actors\u00a0prior\u00a0<\/em>to them signing on. All of Sawyer\u2019s offensive comments were made prior to him signing on, and were there proper practices in place, he could have never been brought on board and the entire situation now could have been avoided.<\/p>\n

My words, irrelevant of being meant with an intent of humor, were hurtful, and unacceptable. I am ashamed I was capable of these really horrible attempts to get attention at that time. I regret them deeply. This was not acceptable behavior. These were words I threw out at the time with no thought or recognition of the harm my words could do, and now have done today. I am incredibly sorry, ashamed and disappointed in myself for my ignorance back then. I want to be very clear: this is not reflective of what I think or who I am now. Years ago, thanks to friends and experiences who helped me to open my eyes, I began my journey into becoming a more responsible adult \u2013 in terms of what I say, what I do, and beyond. I\u2019ve largely kept that journey private, and this is another way that I have let so many down. I still have more work to do. But how I define myself now does not take away the impact of my words, or my responsibility for them. I am very sorry.<\/p>\n
