Luckily, a majority of them aren\u2019t indicative of a serious problem with your PC. In most cases, a disk write error occurs because of a permissions problem or file corruption\u00a0and can be easily resolved.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Restart_Steam_and_Your_PC\"><\/span>Restart Steam and Your PC<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s a clich\u00e9 for a reason \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/173760\/htg-explains-why-does-rebooting-a-computer-fix-so-many-problems\/\">turning it off and back on again works. If you suddenly experience a disk write error, try restarting Steam. Restarting your computer reinitializes hardware drivers, ends all of the running programs, and clears the memory. If a Steam library folder has been set to read-only, or the user account you run Steam from doesn\u2019t have write permissions for the library folder, Steam can experience a disk write error. Let\u2019s check and see if that is the problem.<\/p>\n<p>First, close Steam if it is running. If it works, you have a permissions problem. As long as you only set it to \u201cRun as Administrator,\u201d you can safely ignore that message.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Change_the_Permissions_for_Your_User\"><\/span>Change the Permissions for Your User<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>For security reasons, it\u2019s not a great idea to always run applications as administrator if you can help it. However, the second solution is more involved. Every file and folder in Windows has user-specific permissions. If something has gone wrong between your user and the Steam folder (or any sub-folders), you can fix it manually.<\/p>\n<p>First, you need to navigate to your Steam folder. It is located in \u201cC:\\Program Files (x86)\u201d by default. Right-click the Steam folder and hit \u201cProperties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Make sure the box for \u201cRead-Only\u201d is not ticked. If \u201cRead-Only\u201d is enabled, untick it, and click \u201cApply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-792885\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/untick-the-box-then-click-apply.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Untick the &quot;Read-only&quot; box, then click &quot;Apply.&quot;\" width=\"371\" height=\"500\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Check the write permissions while you\u2019re in the Properties window. Click on the \u201cSecurity\u201d tab, located along the top. Scroll through the list in the \u201cGroups or User names\u201d section and select your user. Look at the portion of the window labeled \u201cPermissions for Users.\u201d This is what controls all of the permissions for the folder, sub-folders, and files. All of the boxes should be ticked except \u201cSpecial Permissions\u201d. If that is the case, it can produce a variety of error messages.
