The reason Bruce Willis retired&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Aphasia has threatened to rob film fans of Hollywood\u2019s most die-hard action hero. <\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Bruce Willis announced he is\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/03\/30\/bruce-willis-diagnosed-with-aphasia-stepping-away-from-acting\/\">stepping away<\/a>\u00a0from acting amid his life-changing diagnosis with the communication disorder.<\/p>\n<p>Ex-wife Demi Moore released a statement announcing his retirement at age 67. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo Bruce\u2019s amazing supporters, as a family we wanted to share that our beloved Bruce has been experiencing some health issues and has recently been diagnosed with aphasia, which is impacting his cognitive abilities,\u201d Moore, 59, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/Cbu-mD7LMPg\/\">shared on Instagram<\/a>. \u201cAs a result of this and with much consideration Bruce is stepping away from the career that has meant so much to him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The announcement provided no further details as to the type or cause of the \u201cDie Hard\u201d star\u2019s condition. <\/p>\n<p>However, recent reports allege that Willis\u2019 cognitive issues are not necessarily a new development. An insider <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2022\/03\/30\/bruce-willis-had-cognitive-issues-on-recent-sets\/\">told Page Six<\/a> that the actor had recently used \u201cearpieces, hearing things, for them to feed him the lines\u201d on sets, and that \u201cit was increasingly difficult to have him on screen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0\u201cHe was having cognitive problems, they all knew Bruce was having problems,\u201d the insider added. \u201cEverybody knew, the cast and crew. It occurs due to injury at the brain\u2019s speech center \u2014 usually a result of neurological disease, stroke, a brain tumor or bleeding. The diagnosis is confirmed with MRI or CT scans, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nidcd.nih.gov\/health\/aphasia\">according to<\/a> the National Institutes of Health.<\/p>\n<p>This could look like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/aphasia\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20369518\">someone who uses gibberish<\/a>, or can only speak in short spurts. For others, especially those with a neurodegenerative disease like Alzheimer\u2019s, the signs of aphasia can be progressive.
