Brennan <strong>gave recordings to the military police<\/strong>. Vance will do 80 hours of community service and be on probation for 12 months.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The provincial court heard Wednesday how Vance\u2019s intimate relationship with Brennan started in 2001 when both were posted in Gagetown, N.B. and continued until early 2021 when he retired. Vance had failed to disclose the relationship, exposing himself to the possibility of a charge under military regulations, according to an agreed upon statement of facts read into the court record. The court heard that Brennan\u2019s decision to talk to Global TV about the relationship prompted a series of phone calls in February 2021 from Vance in which he tried to convince the major to promote \u201ca <strong>false narrative<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Misconduct list:<\/strong> The <em>Globe<\/em> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-military-misconduct-cases-in-canada-explainer\/\">a helpful breakdown<\/a> of all the senior officers who have been charged or are under investigation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Staying on court: Beverley McLachlin<\/strong> said Wednesday that she will remain a judge on Hong Kong\u2019s highest court despite the <strong>resignation of two British judges<\/strong> who cited the deterioration of freedoms since Beijing imposed a national security law in in 2020, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/world\/article-top-british-judges-withdraw-from-hong-kongs-highest-court\/\">reports<\/a>: \u201cThe court is operating as an independent, judicial branch of government \u2013 perhaps the last surviving strong institution of democracy. And it\u2019s there for people to give them fair hearings and independent justice from the courts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dictator?<\/strong> CPC MP <strong>Rachael Thomas<\/strong> caused a stir Tuesday when she used the word \u201cdictator\u201d to refer to <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong> in the House, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/calgary.ctvnews.ca\/some-conservatives-disagree-with-mp-calling-trudeau-a-dictator-in-house-of-commons-1.5841623\">reports:<\/a> \u201cThere are many Canadians who hold the view that this does <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly to Mr. Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada.\u201d Saskatoon-West MP <strong>Brad Redekopp<\/strong> also used the word in relation to Trudeau. Fellow CPC MP <strong>Michelle Rempel Garner<\/strong> appeared to chide them both on Wednesday:\u00a0\u201cThere are many people in Canada that have fled countries, Venezuela comes to mind, where you have a dictator like Maduro at the helm. I just think it\u2019s incumbent for legislators to inspire Canadians to ensure that our democracy is healthy, our democratic institutions are healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Secret mandates:<\/strong> Lawyers for <strong>Doug Ford<\/strong> have asked the Supreme Court keep mandate letters to his cabinet ministers secret, CBC <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/toronto\/ontario-government-mandate-letters-appeal-supreme-court-canada-1.6401525\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Mandate letters traditionally lay out the marching orders a premier has for each of his or her ministers after taking office \u2014 and have been routinely released by governments across the country. Ford\u2019s government, however, has been fighting to keep his mandate letters from the public since shortly after the premier took office in June 2018. Despite being ordered to release the records by Ontario\u2019s former information and privacy commissioner and having its appeals of that decision dismissed at every level of court so far, the province has decided to use its final option to prevent disclosure: the Supreme Court of Canada.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Impaneled:\u00a0<\/strong>After announcing it would essentially be going back to the drafting table on its promised online harms legislation, the federal government unveiled an expert panel that will help it rework online harms legislation, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/feds-task-experts-with-helping-rework-bill-on-harmful-online-content-1.5841540\">reports<\/a>. The panel of 12 experts\u00a0 will meet regularly over the next two months and ultimately give advice to Heritage Minister Pablo Rodriguez about the bill.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fairbairn passes:<\/strong> Former Liberal senator <strong>Joyce Fairbairn<\/strong> has died at the age of 82, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/03\/30\/former-senator-joyce-fairbairn-has-died-at-the-age-of-82\/#.YkSgAlXMKUn\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notley unimpressed:<\/strong> Several columnists have pieces analyzing the government\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/03\/29\/canadas-new-greenhouse-gas-emissions-plan-to-be-tabled-in-parliament-today-2\/#.YkMaRVXMKUn\">announcement<\/a> Tuesday of a new federal plan for emission reductions. In the <em>Edmonton Journal<\/em>,\u00a0<strong>David Staples<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edmontonjournal.com\/news\/politics\/david-staples-if-trudeaus-new-climate-plan-is-excellent-why-does-rachel-notley-blast-it\">wonders<\/a> if the plan is so great, why is <strong>Rachel Notley<\/strong> critical of it?<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Notley also pointed out of the <strong>unfairness of Trudeau\u2019s scheme<\/strong>, that while the oil and gas sector produces 26 per cent of emissions and the transportation sector produces 25 per cent, oil and gas have been hit with a 42 per cent cut while it\u2019s just 11 per cent for transportation. \u201cThis is manifestly unfair and it will have serious economic consequences for Alberta and for Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>No new rules: Kyle Bakx<\/strong>, writing for CBC from Calgary, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/business\/bakx-emissions-reductions-plan-oilpatch-1.6401297\">argues<\/a> that the oil patch was spared harsh new measures.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For now, the oil patch isn\u2019t facing any new regulations as the actual policy is still in development. There are no details yet on how the cap will be set, how it will change over time and how it will be enforced. On one hand, the industry could benefit from having the policy sooner rather than later considering the 2030 climate target is fewer than eight years away, said Beugin, but it\u2019s such an important policy that it makes sense to develop it properly.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Later rather than sooner:<\/strong> Writing for CBC from Ottawa, <strong>Aaron Wherry<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/climate-change-trudeau-canada-1.6401791\">observes<\/a> that reducing emissions would have been easier if we had started earlier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Some emissions are harder to reduce than others and not every economic sector or province is going to move at the same pace. Matters of \u201cfairness\u201d and feasibility will always be up for debate. But the abiding lesson of climate policy is that <strong>avoiding reality doesn\u2019t make anything easier.<\/strong> Lower emissions for oil and gas in 2030 might be easier to envision now, for instance, had action been taken sooner after 2005. One might gaze wistfully at the climate plan that <strong>Stephen Harper\u2019s<\/strong> government tabled in 2008, with its promise that tough new requirements would be imposed on the oilsands.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Dismal saga:<\/strong> In the Line, <strong>Matt Gurney<\/strong> has a<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/theline.substack.com\/p\/matt-gurney-the-purest-example-of?r=zche&amp;s=r&amp;utm_campaign=post&amp;utm_medium=email\"> strongly argued critique<\/a> of the Liberals long paralysis on fighter jets, which they broke <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/politics\/f-35-negotiations-1.6399978\">this week<\/a>\u00a0when they committed to negotiating an F-35 purchase.\u00a0Gurney traces the paralysis back t0 2015, when the Liberals promised something illogical \u2014 to hold an open competition and not to buy F-35s.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can\u2019t hold an \u201copen\u201d competition and exclude one of the frontrunners. There\u2019s just no way to square the circle. This self-inflicted impossibility was a genuinely weird move in a political campaign that was otherwise a smooth, effective and polished effort. It was like no one at Liberal Party HQ bothered to think this particular campaign pledge through all the way to its, um, second step.
