Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lies a dark mode to apps you get from the Windows Store. It doesn\u2019t affect most desktop apps, but we\u2019ve got some other solutions for those. Here\u2019s how to get your whole desktop (or as much as possible) looking dark.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enable_Dark_Mode_for_Windows_10_Settings_and_Apps\"><\/span>Enable Dark Mode for Windows 10 Settings and Apps<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>To enable Dark Mode, head to Settings &gt; Personalization &gt;\u00a0Colors. Select the \u201cDark\u201d option from the drop-down menu under the \u201cChoose your color\u201d section.<\/p>\n<p>The Settings application itself im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely turns dark, as will many other \u201cUniversal Windows Platform\u201d applications (those you get from the Windows Store). However, it\u2019s up to each developer to support Dark Mode, and many do not. And, as we mentioned before, this option doesn\u2019t affect most desktop applications. Those remain white or stick to their own color scheme. It is set to Light mode by default, but it can be set to respect the system setting, or be forced to use dark mode.<\/p>\n<p>To activate the dark mode in Edge, click the menu button on the toolbar (the icon with three dots at the far right side), and then select the \u201cSettings\u201d option. You\u2019ll need a browser extension like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/222614&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-us%2Fp%2Fturn-off-the-lights-for-microsoft-edge%2F9nblggh52lrr%23activetab%3Dpivot%3Aoverviewtab\">Turn Off the Lights<\/a> to make the whole web dark.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can also set your theme separately in the\u00a0Groove music player, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Movies<\/a> &amp; TV video player, and Photos apps. However, they\u2019ll use your system theme setting by default. You don\u2019t have to change the\u00a0setting manually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Enable Dark Mode in Microsoft Edge<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enable_the_Dark_Theme_in_Microsoft_Office\"><\/span>Enable the\u00a0Dark Theme in Microsoft Office<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Microsoft Office also contains a dark mode, or theme, that isn\u2019t enabled by default and must be manually enabled.<\/p>\n<p>To choose the dark mode, open an Office application like Word or Excel and head to File &gt; Options or click \u201cOptions\u201d in the bottom left as soon as the program starts. On the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>\u201d tab, look for the click the \u201cPersonalize your copy of Microsoft Office\u201d section and set the \u201cOffice Theme\u201d drop-down there to the \u201cBlack\u201d option.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-368388 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/img_5bb524ed07d4a.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Settings for the Office Suite that let you enable dark mode. \" width=\"650\" height=\"384\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Your theme choice applies to all Office\u00a0applications. So, if you set this option in Word and later open Excel, Excel should also use a dark theme.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Enable Dark Mode in Microsoft Office<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Install_Dark_Themes_for_Chrome_Firefox_and_Other_Applications\"><\/span>Install Dark Themes for Chrome, Firefox, and Other Applications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many other Windows desktop applications have their own theming options and engines. For example, Google Chrome will respect the color mode set in the system settings, but you can override it to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/category\/themes\">install your own themes<\/a>. Some of Chrome\u2019s dark themes are pretty different from the default dark mode, so if you\u2019re looking to add some custom flair, they\u2019re worth checking out. Firefox includes a built-in dark theme you can enable.<\/p>\n<p>For example, we installed the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/morpheon-dark\/mafbdhjdkjnoafhfelkjpchpaepjknad?hl=en\">Morpheon Dark theme<\/a> for Chrome. It makes Chrome look much more at home on a dark-themed desktop.<\/p>\n<p>Some websites, including YouTube and Gmail, let you choose a dark theme for that website. For other websites, you\u2019ll need to install a browser extension that turns the whole web dark.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-368396 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/img_5bb528e36016a.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Chrome with a third-party dark mode installed.\" width=\"650\" height=\"300\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have to check to see whether the applications you frequently use offer their own theme options.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Enable_a_Dark_Mode_for_Windows_Desktop_Applications\"><\/span>Enable a\u00a0Dark Mode for Windows Desktop Applications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The real problem with the new Dark Mode setting is that it doesn\u2019t affect all of the Windows desktop applications. Some desktop applications, like Notepad, continue using the normal, light theme.<\/p>\n<p>Windows has a built-in dark mode for desktop applications, but it probably isn\u2019t ideal. To enable it, head to Settings &gt; Ease of Access &gt; High Contrast. On the right, enable the \u201cTurn on High Contrast\u201d option and set the \u201cChoose a Theme\u201d dropdown to the \u201cHigh Contrast Black\u201d setting. Click \u201cApply\u201d to save the setting.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-368392 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/img_5bb525c2a8d34.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"High contrast settings menu.\" width=\"650\" height=\"389\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Setting this high contrast theme makes most desktop applications show a dark background. However, they don\u2019t look all that great. High contrast themes are an accessibility feature designed to increase contrast, so the screen is easier to read and understand. They don\u2019t look nearly as slick as a modern dark mode would.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-368391 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/img_5bb5259ac28b0.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Notepad with high contrast mode active.\" width=\"650\" height=\"209\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Install Custom Themes and Visual Styles in Windows<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you want a slicker dark mode for desktop applications that don\u2019t change with the system setting, you\u2019ll have to resort to a third-party app. While there are a few out there, we\u2019re big fans of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stardock.com\/buy2?s=ESD-SDS-W1241&amp;affiliate=LSM03\">WindowBlinds from Stardock<\/a> (the same company that makes apps like Fences and Start10.) The app costs $9.99, but there\u2019s a free 30-day trial, so you can see if it\u2019s right for you.<\/p>\n<p>The nice part is that, when you apply a theme in WindowBlinds, it applies to everything\u2014UWP apps, desktop apps, dialog boxes\u2014you name it.<\/p>\n<p>After installing it, fire it up and head to the \u201cStyle\u201d tab. To apply a theme, just select the one you want, and then click the \u201cApply Style To Desktop\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-793051\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/WindowBlinds.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Select your theme, then click &quot;Apply to Desktop.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"418\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>WindowBlinds doesn\u2019t have a built-in dark mode (though some built-in themes are darker than others). You can always create your own by clicking the \u201cModify Style\u201d link under any theme. You can adjust pretty much anything you can think of there. But, there\u2019s an easier way.<\/p>\n<p>Just head to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wincustomize.com\/explore\/windowblinds\">WindowBlinds section of the WinCustomize site<\/a>. There, you\u2019ll find all kinds of WindowBlinds-compatible skins you can download. After downloading one, double-click the file. The theme will be added to the \u201cStyle\u201d tab in WindowsBlinds so that you can apply it (or customize it) from there.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s a shot of File Explorer with the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wincustomize.com\/explore\/windowblinds\/8824\/\">Dark Mode skin<\/a>\u00a0(our favorite of the various dark themes on the site) applied through WindowBlinds:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignnone wp-image-345337 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/dt_c.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"File Explorer with a theme from WindowsBlinds applied. \" width=\"636\" height=\"390\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Not bad, right?
