This was an X1.3.<\/p>\n<p>NASA continued: \u201cX-class denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, etc.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Data on this week\u2019s CMEs has been captured by NASA\u2019s Solar Dynamics Observatory and Solar and Heliospheric Observatory.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/solar-flare.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A powerful X-class solar flare as it erupted from the Sun on March 30.\" class=\"wp-image-21748341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/solar-flare.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/solar-flare.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/solar-flare.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>A powerful X-class solar flare as it erupted from the sun on March 30.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">NASA Solar Dynamics Observatory<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They\u2019re the result of an unusually active sunspot, dark and violent regions that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear due to a tangle of powerful magnetic forces.<\/p>\n<p>The storms have led to showings of the northern lights at unusually low latitudes in Europe and North America.<\/p>\n<p>Solar storms are caused by CMEs and solar flares, which are huge expulsions\u00a0of hot material called plasma from the sun\u2019s outer layer.<\/p>\n<p>They can lead to the appearance of colorful auroras by energizing particles in our planet\u2019s atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Each solar storm is graded by severity on a scale of 1 to 5, with a G1 described as \u201cminor\u201d and a G5 as \u201cextreme.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Storms at the upper end of the scale wreak havoc on our planet\u2019s magnetic field, which can disrupt power grids and communications networks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHarmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth\u2019s atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground,\u201d NASA says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever \u2014 when intense enough \u2014 they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the past, larger solar flares have wreaked havoc on our planet.<\/p>\n<p>In 1989, a strong solar eruption shot so many electrically charged particles at Earth that the Canadian province of Quebec lost power for nine hours.<\/p>\n<p>As well as causing issues for our tech, they can cause harm to astronauts working on the International Space Station, either through radiation exposure or by interfering with mission control communications.<\/p>\n<p>The Earth\u2019s magnetic field helps to protect us from the more extreme consequences of solar flares.<\/p>\n<p><em>This story originally appeared <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-sun.com\/tech\/5026596\/nasa-moment-powerful-solar-flare-erupted-sun\/\">on the Sun<\/a> and was reproduced here with permission. <\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
