In part, this is because HR doesn\u2019t really know what they\u2019re supposed to be looking for. You can brief them as much as you want but there are some nuances to a candidate that only someone who actually understands and knows the trade can actually make a proper judgment on.<\/p>\n<p>                <iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/4ur6s9bbic?videoFoam=true&amp;autoPlay=true\" title=\"\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As a senior dev, I\u2019ve often been in situations where I play the role of HR and shift through all resumes that come through.<\/p>\n<p>Most of them go into the rejected pile.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> resume writing advice is that you have 10 seconds to impress the person on the other side. This advice is certainly not wrong.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_10_seconds\"><\/span>Why 10 seconds?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I remember when I first got the task of looking at resumes. It was fun at first\u200a\u2014\u200auntil you realize that you\u2019ve just spent 30 minutes looking at two <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lications, there\u2019s still at least a few other dozen to look at, and my actual day job as a developer.<\/p>\n<p>After that realization, I became ruthless out of necessity and time constraints.<\/p>\n<p>Every day, I\u2019d dedicate a maximum of one hour per day for an entire week to create a shortlist of possible candidates. After the second day, I started to notice a trend. If an applicant fell into any one of these categories, they im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely went into the rejected pile.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mass application<\/strong>\u200a \u2013 a lot of candidates didn\u2019t read the actual job application and was applying to every position available<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unjustified wall of acronyms<\/strong> \u2013 \u200asurely, one of these will be applicable to the job, right?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bar\/pie graphs<\/strong>\u200a \u2013 \u200a85% proficient in JavaScript, apparently, but measured against what standard?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Font too small \/ too hard to read\u200a<\/strong> \u2013 \u200aif I can\u2019t read it, I can\u2019t read it. It\u2019s not ok to send through something in 5pt font just because you feel compelled to fit everything on two pages.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_made_it_past_the_death_pile\"><\/span>What made it past the death pile?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There were a few gems that made it past the inbox stage and beyond the reject button. The main common trait is that they all looked like they were written by humans and not bots.<\/p>\n<p>A generic resume will receive a generic response, and often times that generic response comes in the form of a copy-paste rejection email or nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you look different from all the rest? How do you capture the time sparse attention of the person looking at your application?<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way is to write how you\u2019d speak.<\/p>\n<p>Ignore what you\u2019ve read about cover letters and how to write resumes. It\u2019ll side-track you and make you think that you have to follow the format you\u2019re looking at. Not only that, it\u2019ll help you melt into the pile of sameness that you want to avoid.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what to do instead.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_actually_write_your_resume\"><\/span>How to actually write your resume<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Start by creating a master document and list out all the projects you\u2019ve worked on. Document your role, your participation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> you used, and what you actually did.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t worry about the length or number of pages. The goal is to put down your entire professional life into digital ink. If you\u2019re new to the industry and don\u2019t have a backlog of projects, you can use whatever side projects you\u2019ve done. If you\u2019re struggling to write anything down then it means you haven\u2019t really done much at all at your previous job and you need to strategize a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> plan to quickly create some prototype apps.<\/p>\n<p>The second step to this is to shortlist the jobs you like. Don\u2019t mass apply.<\/p>\n<p>Look at each job carefully. Ask yourself these questions and answer them honestly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Do I want to work here?<\/li>\n<li>Why do I want to work here?<\/li>\n<li>What are my current relevant experiences? Does it fit with the required brief<\/li>\n<li>What are the gaps in my experiences and what can I do about it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first three answers can be turned into your cover letter. The final question can be part of your \u2018professional development\u2019 section.<\/p>\n<p>Many applicants feel compelled to put in a hobbies section simply because the generic templates suggest that you should. But you\u2019ve only got a maximum of two pages (sometimes three) so use your real estate wisely. That\u2019s why it\u2019s better to have a professional development section where you can showcase your willingness to learn and improve on a knowledge gap.<\/p>\n<p>For your actual resume, copy and paste the most relevant points from your master document and edit it to tighten up your professional life story. The reader on the other side doesn\u2019t have to know everything about you\u200a\u2014\u200ajust the things that make sense to them.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_thoughts\"><\/span>Final thoughts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Having a master document can help you keep track of what you\u2019ve done in the past. The more detailed, the better. You don\u2019t have to be job searching to start this document\u200a\u2014\u200abut it comes in rather handy when you are actively looking.<\/p>\n<p>The job description is not a trap test where you have to cover every possible technology in order to be the chosen one. Sometimes it feels like it because employers list a host of different tech. But not everything is required. We understand if you\u2019re skilled in one area but not the other. We\u2019re developers too. We know what it\u2019s like. We\u2019re humans, not bots.<\/p>\n<p>What we\u2019re looking for is relevance.
