\n Cam Newton is happ<\/a>y to be with the New England Patriots this season, and that\u2019s bad news<\/a> for 31 other NFL teams.<\/p>\n

The former MVP was unceremoniously released from the Carolina Panthers in March, with questions about his health keeping him on the free agent market until the Patriots \u2014 foraying into a post-Tom Brady world \u2014 signed him to a low-risk, one-year deal.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wake up mad,\u201d Newton said of how his Panthers tenure ended on a conference call Friday. \u201cI\u2019m a self motivator.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite telling reporters \u201cthe past is the past,\u201d the 31-year-old dual-threat quarterback hasn\u2019t hid his displeasure with Carolina since his release. His final season with the Panthers was marred by injury. With coronavirus preventing teams from getting up-close looks at him, Newton felt the uncertainty in his future this offseason.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, the wait was so long I\u2019d be lying if I didn\u2019t say a lot of potentials didn\u2019t creep into my mind,\u201d he said. \u201cI used it as fuel, as a constant reminder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Newton joins New England as the presumptive starter, though coach Bill Belichick won\u2019t hand him the reins just yet. He\u2019ll battle it out with second-year QB Jarrett Stidham and veteran Brian Hoyer \u2014 \u201cStiddy\u201d and \u201cHoyster,\u201d as they\u2019ve been nicknamed by Newton. Coming with the starting competition, Newton has begun studying a whole new playbook.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis (expletive) is calculus,\u201d Newton said he told receiver Julian Edelman the first time they spoke.<\/p>\n

The crash courses have begun for the Patriots, with practices in Foxborough under way. There\u2019s still time for Newton to get everything \u2014 his health, a fresh playbook, and a chip on his shoulder \u2014 ready for the Patriots season opener on Sept. 13.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe season isn\u2019t here yet,\u201d Newton said. \u201cHow I feel right now? I feel amazing. I feel great. At this particular time sir, I\u2019m full go.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
