“#On Set With the ‘Endeavour’ Cast: Who’s Back, Who (and What) Is Missing & When It Might End<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s the end of 1970, and the investigators of Endeavour<\/i> are trying to solve multiple murders in Oxford, England. Crime scene photos and a map cover one wall \u2014 this is serious business for Det. Sgt. Endeavour Morse (Shaun Evans) and his partner, Det. Chief Insp. Fred Thursday (Roger Allam, above left, with Evans). But between shots on this soundstage north of London, smiles emerge as the actors chat with longtime costars Anton Lesser (respected boss Chief Supt. Reginald Bright) and Sean Rigby (Det. Sgt. Jim Strange).<\/p>\n

There\u2019s reason for good spirits. When TV Guide Magazine<\/em> visited the set last November, cast and crew were days away from wrapp<\/a>ing Season 7 of the British mystery series<\/a>, and it had already been renewed. Plus, the reunited leads share more screen time after their characters were sent to different divisions last year. \u201cWe all missed each other,\u201d says Rigby. \u201cWe\u2019d pass outside our trailers and go, \u2018I haven\u2019t seen you in ages. What\u2019s going on?\u2019 It\u2019s been lovely being back together.\u201d<\/p>\n

The three new 90-minute installments show that the prequel\u2019s Oxford-educated, opera- and crossword-puzzle-loving loner Morse has grown. No longer a novice detective, he\u2019s more akin to the cantankerous white-haired character played by the late John Thaw in the PBS Mystery! <\/i>staple Inspector Morse<\/i> (1987\u20132000). \u201cWe\u2019re getting closer now to the Morse everyone knows,\u201d says producer James Levison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One visual similarity: Evans is clean-shaven after sporting a rather unpopular moustache in Season 6. \u201cThe amount of people who said to me, \u2018I didn\u2019t like that \u2019tache!\u2019\u201d he remarks, sighing.<\/p>\n

The actor directs the Sunday, August 9 opener, in which a young woman\u2019s body is found on New Year\u2019s Day. Morse eventually gets involved, but at the time the perpetually unlucky-in-love bachelor was waking up in Italy with an alluring woman he met at the opera (Stephanie Leonidas) \u2014 someone he hasn\u2019t seen the last of.<\/p>\n

Sara Vickers does not<\/i> appear as Morse\u2019s great love, Thursday\u2019s daughter Joan. Instead, the actress had a baby! \u201cHopefully she will be back next year,\u201d Evans says. \u201c[Joan] is one of the big loves of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Filming took Evans to Venice for a few days. \u201cIt\u2019s not dissimilar to Oxford inasmuch as you can point the camera anywhere and it looks extraordinary,\u201d he notes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Back in England, the cases reflect a changing society: A promising female scientist fights for her due, racist rhetoric escalates before an election, and students at an all-female college oppose its going coed. For the increasingly dour Thursday, the job is taking its toll; he and his prot\u00e9g\u00e9 have some brutal clashes. \u201cThere\u2019s disagreement over a case, and Endeavour is kind of critical of Fred \u2014 the word used is pedestrian<\/i>,\u201d Allam says. And Morse is anything but pedestrian.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s the relationships between characters as much as the mysteries that matter to viewers. Since the pilot aired in 2012, Endeavour <\/em>has nurtured an increasingly devoted coterie of fans, some of whom follow the series to Oxford when it shoots on location. Levison, who was new to the show this season, was warned about the turnout, but was still overwhelmed. \u201cThe first day we were just surrounded,\u201d he marvels, \u201cand I have absolutely no idea how they find out. It is remarkable, the fanbase, and how loyal they are.\u201d<\/p>\n

Even with such devotion, the Endeavour<\/em> looks to be winding down. Allam, who initially didn\u2019t want to sign for more than two seasons, is ready to hang up Thursday\u2019s trusty hat should Season 8 be the finale. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine it going much beyond that,\u201d he says. \u201cI think everything needs an end.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s way less to go than we\u2019ve travel<\/a>ed,\u201d Evans reflects. \u201cThe amazing thing is that we\u2019ve come this far. I didn\u2019t think we would. And I think we\u2019ve got something we should be very proud of.\u201d A tremendous endeavor, indeed!<\/p>\n
