\n Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler tore into rioters who set a blaze at a police station while blocking exits, calling the violence an act of \u201cattempted murder\u201d \u2014 but that didn\u2019t stop firebug protesters from coming back overnight.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you commit arson with an accelerant in an attempt to burn down a building that is occupied by people who you have intentionally trapp<\/a>ed inside, you are not demonstrating, you are attempting to commit murder,\u201d Wheeler fumed during a press conference Thursday. \u201cI believe that city staff could have died last night. I cannot and I will not tolerate that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wheeler was referring to a riot that erupted Wednesday night at the Portland Police Bureau\u2019s East Precinct during the city\u2019s 70th consecutive night of protests over police brutality, according to local FOX affiliate KPTV.<\/p>\n

Along with setting the blaze, rioters allegedly shot fireworks at cops, broke doors and disabled security cameras as police declared a riot and unleashed tear gas, according to the station.<\/p>\n

But despite Wheeler\u2019s plea, protesters returned to the police station Thursday night, lit another fire in a trash can next to the building and tried to break into it, according to the Portland Police Bureau, which declared another riot.<\/p>\n

During the mayhem, protesters threw bottles and rocks, injuring at least one officer, and damaged multiple police vehicles. The injured officer was \u201cseverely hurt\u201d by a large rock that hit the cop\u2019s shoulder,\u00a0 police said in a press release, which provided no further details.<\/p>\n

Wheeler \u2014 a Democrat who was tear-gassed by federal officials as he stood with protesters several weeks ago \u2014 warned that violent protesters are helping President Trump spread the message that anarchists are running wild in Portland and other liberal cities.<\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t think for a moment that if you are participating in this activity, you are not being a prop for the re-election campaign of Donald Trump \u2014 because you absolutely are,\u201d Wheeler said. \u201cIf you don\u2019t want to be part of that, then don\u2019t show up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clashes between protesters and federal agents sent by Trump to guard the Mark O. Hatfield United States Courthouse became a national focal point last month.<\/p>\n
