In a partner open forum, Schultz <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7ny7x\/starbucks-ceo-announces-nfts-to-workers-amid-union-drive\">mentioned<\/a> that &#8220;sometime before the end of the calendar year, we are going to be in the NFT business.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement received its fair share of backlash. In a tweet, user smchatter1 wrote that \u201ccorporations could just pay employees living wages instead of burning profits to maintain illusions.\u201d Michael Lama also criticized the move:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;and here is how we&#8217;re going to try to dupe, scam, and milk even more money out of our employees&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Michael Lama (@LamaLamaRedPjma) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LamaLamaRedPjma\/status\/1511240936378015748?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 5, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nWhile integrating NFTs may seem like a progressive move, some <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en\/article\/n7ny7x\/starbucks-ceo-announces-nfts-to-workers-amid-union-drive\">believe<\/a> that it\u2019s a way to distract people from the company\u2019s actions against the formation of unions. An hour after the announcement, Starbucks fired Laila Dalton, a union leader who had worked for the company for more than three years.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview, Dalton <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/perfectunion.us\/starbucks-fires-union-leader-laila-dalton\/\">said<\/a> that managers were constantly harassing her for being the leader of a union. \u201cI\u2019m always expecting it because I\u2019m harassed every single day,\u201d Dalton said.<\/p>\n<p>Efforts to unionize stores are gaining ground in the United States. On April 1, the Starbucks Roastery at New York&#8217;s Chelsea market became the tenth unionized Starbucks in the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">First Roastery and tenth union Starbucks in the U.S. We are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/unionstrong?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#unionstrong<\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XByqnJ6CEn\">pic.twitter.com\/XByqnJ6CEn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 SBWorkersUnited (@SBWorkersUnited) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SBWorkersUnited\/status\/1510037854306590726?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, Amazon workers in Staten Island recently <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MorePerfectUS\/status\/1509926506952368136\">won<\/a> the vote to become the first U.S. Amazon union, a move that has been seen by many labor politics observers to be a significant victory for labor in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Schultz has been very vocal against unions. In the partner meeting, he <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stories.starbucks.com\/stories\/2022\/our-best-days-are-in-front-of-us-howard-schultz-shares-vision-for-starbucks-future\/\">described<\/a> Starbucks as \u201cA pro-partner company. A company that does not need someone in between us and our people.\u201d He also <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MorePerfectUS\/status\/1511068876905357325\">claimed<\/a> that companies throughout the country are \u201cbeing assaulted in many ways by the threat of unionization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite this supposed threat of unionization, Starbucks <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investor.starbucks.com\/press-releases\/financial-releases\/press-release-details\/2021\/Starbucks-Reports-Record-Q4-and-Full-Year-Fiscal-2021-Results\/default.aspx\">made<\/a> record profits in Q4 of 2021 while employees shared concerns over unhealthy and unpredictable schedules in addition to benefits problems and low pay.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB)\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2022\/03\/16\/starbucks-nlrb-complaint\/\">issued<\/a> a complaint against the coffee company and accused it of targeting workers who wanted to form unions. According to the NLRB, employees have the right to seek improvements and form unions.
