Scientists have already identified drug-resistant strains of several commonly known bugs, including salmonella, tuberculosis, streptococcus, staphylococcus and so-called \u201csuper\u201d gonorrhea, to name a few. Those are added to the more than 2.8 million drug-resistant infections \u2014 35,000 of them fatal \u2014 that occur every year in the US, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/drugresistance\/pdf\/threats-report\/2019-ar-threats-report-508.pdf\">most recent data<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven before COVID, antibiotic resistance was one of the biggest threats to public health,\u201d said lead study author Dr. Juliana Menezes, whose findings are being presented at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology &amp; Infectious Diseases in Lisbon later this month. \u201cIt can make conditions like pneumonia, sepsis, urinary tract and wound infections untreatable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Researchers can\u2019t be sure who \u2014 human or beast \u2014 is to blame for the spread, so they\u2019re asking pet parents to be vigilant with their pups and refrain from wet kisses or \u201ceating from the owner\u2019s plate,\u201d Menezes <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/2022\/04\/05\/letting-dog-lick-face-might-render-antibiotics-useless\/\">told the Telegraph<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Menezes noted that E.coli is found in the gut and, thus, in feces.
