\n A selfless hero drowned while trying to save three drowning children \u2014 all strangers to him \u2014 in California this week.<\/p>\n

Manjeet Singh, 29, died after jumping into the Kings River after seeing two girls and a boy get swept away by the current at the popular recreation area in Reedley, the local ABC affiliate reported.<\/p>\n

Singh \u2014 who was there to go jet skiiing \u2014 lost his life, as did one of the two girls.<\/p>\n

He had come to the US from India two years ago, and recently moved to Fresno, where he started a truck driving school, officials said.<\/p>\n

Singh and his brother-in-law had gone to the river to cool off, officials said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe went in to try to help them and unfortunately went under pretty quickly and never came back up,\u201d Reedley police Commander Marc Ediger told reporters.<\/p>\n

Other bystanders were able to pull one of the kids out. That little girl, an 8-year-old, was on life support, police said. The other surviving child was able to climb to shore on his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the kids waded out too far and started being carried by the current under the bridge,\u201d Ediger said.<\/p>\n

Police said they did not know whether Singh even knew how to swim. It took rescue workers 40 minutes to find him and pull him from the water.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
