During recording, she would drive into Manhattan from her parents\u2019 home, where she had her own basement apartment, to the Crack House studio in Soho. \u201cThe name wasn\u2019t because of drugs,\u201d she said. \u201cWe were producing crack in hit records.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a male-dominated hip-hop scene, Ashanti was determined to prove herself both as a singer and a songwriter. \u201cI just remember being a young girl from Long Island amongst all of these guys and gangstas in the studio, and they didn\u2019t know if I could really write,\u201d she said. \u201cSo they were always giving me tests. She\u2019s also shooting a romantic comedy, \u201cThe Plus One,\u201d with Cedric the Entertainer,  while working on new music to come later this year. Plus, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thesource.com\/2022\/04\/01\/ashanti-is-the-author-of-a-new-childrens-book-my-name-is-story\/\">she has a children\u2019s book<\/a>, \u201cMy Name Is a Story,\u201d due in July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s encouraging kids to be happy and feel OK about being different or having a different name,\u201d said Ashanti. \u201cYou know, my name is different; it\u2019s not common. But I want kids that have a different name to understand that that\u2019s power in itself. Love your name.
