She was 33 years old at the time, and \u201cas a young person, I didn\u2019t know I could get breast cancer,\u201d she recalls. It was more than a year later, after pregnancy and having her baby girl, that she noticed an indented line on her breast in addition to the lump. \u201cIt turned out I had a four-centimetre tumour.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One year after her diagnosis, Wilson found out her cancer had metastasized to her bones. It was then that she decided to get genomic profiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1235523\" style=\"width: 909px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\" wp-image-1235523 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/FB_IMG_1646463016282.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"899\" height=\"600\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elizabeth Wilson and her daughter, Violet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_genomic_profiling_and_its_role_in_precision_oncology\"><\/span>What is genomic profiling and its role in precision oncology?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Genomic profiling refers to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">analysis of a tumour sample to look at the activity level of specific genes that affect the behaviour of cancer, including how likely it is to spread and how it may respond to different treatments. \u201cIt\u2019s one aspect of precision oncology,\u201d says Dr. Karen A. Gelmon,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> professor of medicine, University of British Columbia and medical oncologist, BC Cancer. \u201cPrecision oncology involves knowing about the tumour and the patient, and using this information to assess <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ropriate treatment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, many centres use genomic profiling for various cancers in some capacity, but its use for breast cancer is not yet standard. The Canadian Breast Cancer Network (CBCN), Canada\u2019s only patient-directed national breast cancer health charity, issued a report about precision oncology and breast cancer in 2021, informed by engagements with patients and oncologists focusing on the gaps and needs in this space. The CBCN report calls for a coordinated national framework to guide genomic testing use, to ensure equitable and timely patient access to testing and treatment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1235525\" style=\"width: 917px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-sizes=\"auto\" class=\" wp-image-1235525 lazyload\" src=\"https:\/\/www.macleans.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Gelmon-face-september-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"907\" height=\"662\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Karen A. Gelmon, MD FRCPC, University of British Columbia and BC Cancer<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evolution of precision oncology allows physicians to deliver a more individualized treatment model, with the goal of matching the right drug to the right person at the right time. Through genomic profiling, clinicians can better predict what a tumour will do and how it will respond to specific targeted treatments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The utility of genomic profiling may be different in various stages of breast cancer in an individual. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Wilson\u2019s case, genomic testing\u2013did not present new therapy options, but it empowered her with the knowledge to make decisions about her current and prospective treatments. \u201cIf we did genomic testing as standard of care, we could catch mutations and start therapies earlier,\u201d says Wilson.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Integrating_precision_oncology_into_standard_breast_cancer_treatment\"><\/span>Integrating precision oncology into standard breast cancer treatment<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Canada has approved several targeted therapies, but they require testing for molecular biomarkers prior to use. This speaks to another recommendation coming out of the CBCN report\u2013working toward a more flexible and faster approach to the approval and funded access to innovative cancer therapies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covid-19 demonstrated that rapid testing standards and expedited approvals of new therapies are possible. Applied to genomic profiling and new cancer therapies, accelerated reviews would improve outcomes for those living with breast and other forms of cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Education is also essential as patients partner with their care providers to navigate disease management towards a cure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cathy Ammendolea, CBCN board chair, has experienced a personal breast cancer diagnosis.
