Touch screens typically prompt patrons to leave a tip ranging from 18 to 30% \u2014 and sometimes even higher \u2014 when they grab and go. <\/p>\n<p>Occasionally, the prompts replace the old tip jar  \u2014 upping the ante on what was customarily a tossed buck or some loose change. But in many instances, patrons are being pressured to pony up at places where they\u2019ve never been expected to tip before \u2014 say, for waiting on line for their burgers and fries at Five Guys. And they\u2019re not h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y about the sudden ubiquity of gratuity gauging. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was somewhere spending $23 on just coffee and pastries and the suggested tip was another $8 and I simply said no way. I\u2019ll give a dollar or so as a custom tip amount, but let\u2019s have a reality check here,\u201d said Jared Goodman, a 26-year-old recruiter who lives in Brooklyn. \u201cRecently I got a quick bite with my girlfriend and the suggested tip amounts were 25, 35 and even 40%. When you order from a counter, she said, \u201cthere is no added service,\u201d yet she feels compelled to leave gratuity anyway. \u201cYou can call that guilt tipping.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Others, however, say they won\u2019t be cowed by the machines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t tip people who just are doing their jobs by doing counter work,\u201d Chelsea resident Stanley Vogel said, adding that he always tips servers at full-service restaurants. But, \u201clike in a bakery if they\u2019re just giving me a loaf of bread, I\u2019m not gonna tip \u2019em for that \u2026 I never tip people who are counter people that just bring me something I can get myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smart tablets haven\u2019t changed anything for him: \u201cI\u2019m puzzled that these people who are just doing their job expect a tip for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Show_me_the_money\"><\/span>Show me the money<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Some wonder if businesses are doing this to pad their bottom line.<\/p>\n<p>In New York City,<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dol.ny.gov\/system\/files\/documents\/2022\/03\/cr146.pdf\">\u00a0restaurant servers often make below minimum wage<\/a>, and patrons are expected to reward their hard work with tips that will augment their salaries. I was friendly with all the guys \u2014 but I never tipped,\u201d Sholder said. \u201cNow it comes up [digitally] and it feels like, \u2018Oh, he\u2019s a cheapskate, he didn\u2019t tip.\u2019 It puts pressure on me so I really don\u2019t like it, I feel it should be more voluntary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Naomi Blanco, a tourist from the Bay Area, said that guilt isn\u2019t the only drawback to digital tipping.<\/p>\n<p>When \u201cyou\u2019re just pushing a button,\u201d she said, there\u2019s less appreciation from the staff. \u201cYou don\u2019t get a lot of \u2018wow, thanks so much!\u2019 It\u2019s just kind of like there\u2019s an expectation from their side.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/040622FeaturesGuiltTippingBZ20.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Mary Canner and Linda Flaxer are fans of the new style of digital tipping. Tipping is good karma \u2026 it\u2019s never mandatory, but it\u2019s customary.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pandemic_tipped_the_scales\"><\/span>Pandemic tipped the scales <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s why some big-hearted New Yorkers are just going with the cash flow. They say the pandemic has pulled at their heart \u2014 and purse \u2014\u00a0strings. Even famed restaurateur Danny Meyer has backed away from his famed \u201cno tips allowed\u201d policy at all of his eateries due to the financial stresses placed on his staff by COVID-19.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say I felt more uncomfortable about it before COVID, but now I know the sacrifices that so many service people have made. We opened four months ago just as Omicron was hitting,\u201d Sam said from behind the register.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPersonally, I view that the tip culture where we live has become part of the norm to the point where people don\u2019t view it as any sort of pressure,\u201d he added. \u201cWhether you want to do it or not is completely up to the patron.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to a touch screen, the husband and wife pair keep a conventional tip box out, with an estimated 20% of patrons opting to show appreciation the old-fashioned way.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Ilyayevs say their customers are so giving that they have also set up another  collection fund \u2014 by way of cash and QR code \u2014 that goes directly to charities supporting Ukraine from their small, takeout only shop. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve reached about $250 in the past two or three weeks,\u201d Sam said.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
