But they\u2019re worries that should be shared by our own. In short, the lousiness of the elites is coming back to haunt them.<\/p>\n<p>They deserve it.<\/p>\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron is the establishment candidate in this month\u2019s election (though the party he founded in 2016 rode that year\u2019s anti-establishment wave). But he\u2019s in trouble.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After some bad polls and a round of \u201cyellow jacket\u201d protests in the streets by farmers and working-class citizens who felt ignored and demeaned by his government, Macron moderated his <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach a bit, taking a harder line on radical Islam and a less politically correct line on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> and economic issues. (He even denounced \u201cwoke\u201d politics as the corrupt invention of American academics.)<\/p>\n<p>As an incumbent, with a strong foreign threat from Vladimir Putin\u2019s Russia, he should be cruising to victory.\u00a0Nonetheless, he\u2019s got a tough election ahead of him.\u00a0An IFOP poll released this week, as Michel Gurfinkiel notes in The New York Sun, suggests <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nysun.com\/article\/as-le-pen-surges-in-polls-france-faces-danger-of-a-red-black-coalition-in-its-national-assembly\">it\u2019ll be close<\/a>:\u00a0\u201cMacron would get 27 percent of the vote in the first round, coming Sunday, and Marine Le Pen would qualify as his sole opponent in the second round, on April 24, with 23 percent. The final score might then be 53 percent for Monsieur Macron and 47 percent for Madame Le Pen.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/marine-le-pen.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Marine Le Pen\" class=\"wp-image-21823025\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/marine-le-pen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/marine-le-pen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/marine-le-pen.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Right-wing politician Marine Le Pen is polling very close to French President Emmanuel Macron in the country\u2019s presidential election.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s a win for Macron, but it\u2019s a squeaker, and pollsters warn that anything could happen with such a narrow margin.<\/p>\n<p>This is a major change in French politics.\u00a0Marine Le Pen is the daughter of French rightist politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.\u00a0But where leftists hated the father, they\u2019re increasingly willing to vote for the daughter in a two-way race with Macron.<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because in a huge shift, the left and the right hate the establishment more than they hate each other.\u00a0Gurfinkiel says that what he calls the \u201cResentment Coalition\u201d of left and right could command as much as 60% of the electorate. Because our situation is similar.<\/p>\n<p>The 2016 election of President Donald Trump was something of a \u201cResentment Coalition\u201d victory itself.\u00a0And that\u2019s because our establishment has given citizens a lot to resent.\u00a0(Media organizations promised to look into the Trump phenomenon, then quickly turned to demonizing Trump\u2019s voters instead.)<\/p>\n<p>The establishment gave us victory in World War II, antibiotics, moon landings and a win in the Cold War. In light of that, Americans were willing to cut it some slack, at least so long as it paid lip service to American traditions, American exceptionalism and, well, Americans.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/donald-trump-1.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"President Donald Trump\" class=\"wp-image-21823094\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/donald-trump-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/donald-trump-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/donald-trump-1.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Former President Donald Trump won his election due to bipartisan resentment of the establishment. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But the Cold War ended 30 years ago, and since then the establishment\u2019s track record hasn\u2019t been so good, and it\u2019s treated ordinary Americans with increasing disrespect. The result is that many Americans on the left and the right are starting to realize they hate the establishment more than they hate each other. This, of course, terrifies the elites.<\/p>\n<p>The usual establishment move is to call its opponents on the right bigots while mobilizing those on the left to attack the right.\u00a0It tried that in France with the yellow-jacket movement, with limited success:\u00a0French geographer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/opinion\/2019\/01\/15\/glenn-reynolds-class-warfare-elites-explains-world-conflicts-trump-column\/2569252002\/\">Christophe Guilluy observed<\/a>, \u201cImmediately, the protesters were denounced as xenophobes, anti-Semites and homophobes. The elites present themselves as anti-fascist and anti-racist, but this is merely a way of defending their class interests.
