He went and got me ice and started kissing my toes and saying, \u2018Should I call 911?\u2019 He was taking care of me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chosen by his teachers to show the new kids around school because, according to Berlinn, \u201che was always the super sweet kid, and stood up for the underdog,\u201d today Corey, 31, is a drug-addict on the streets of San Francisco. They say a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sfist.com\/2022\/01\/18\/the-linkage-center-at-the-heart-of-breeds-tenderloin-emergency-decalration-has-opened\/\">linkage center<\/a>, created in January by Breed for addicts to connect to services and get clean needles and other drug paraphernalia, has only exacerbated the problem.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started off with Mayor Breed declaring a state of emergency because open-air drug markets were out of control,\u201d said Berlinn. \u201cWe were excited when she opened the linkage center. But the linkage center has become like a supervised [drug] consumption site. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clean needles part I agree with,\u201d added Berlinn, pointing out that it can save lives. It was the first contact she had had with him in months. He told her he knew people who had lost their thumbs, and their legs below the knee, from drug-related infections.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote><p>\u2018I\u2019ve never seen such little police presence as in the last two years.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><cite>Author Randy Shaw, on the rise of open-air drug markets<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe told me he is proud of me for what I\u2019m doing,\u201d said Berlinn, and that he thinks drug use should not be taking place out in the open for children to see.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to shutting down the drug markets, MADD wants California officials to offer universal psychiatry for the drug-addicted and mentally ill homeless, and to advocate for basic shelter for all \u2014 but, in a tough love <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach, force addicts to commit to rehabilitation if they want to qualify for an apartment.<\/p>\n<p>Breed\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7news.com\/sf-billboard-union-square-fentanyl-san-francisco-moms-against-drug-deaths\/11709896\/\">released a statement<\/a>\u00a0last week responding to the MADD billboard, saying she agrees open-air drug dealing needs to stop, that 20 additional police officers have been assigned to the Tenderloin, and that this year so far, police have seized four times the amount of fentanyl as they did during the same period last year.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jacqui-berlinn-gina-mcdonald.jpg?w=682\" alt=\"Jacqui Berlinn (right) co-founded MADD with Gina McDonald, who is also a former addict. \" class=\"wp-image-21816042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jacqui-berlinn-gina-mcdonald.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1023 1023w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jacqui-berlinn-gina-mcdonald.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jacqui-berlinn-gina-mcdonald.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=341 341w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jacqui-berlinn-gina-mcdonald.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><figcaption>Jacqui Berlinn (right) co-founded MADD with Gina McDonald, who is a former addict. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Jacqui Berlinn<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Berlinn, 56, a legal process clerk for Alameda County, claims San Francisco hobbles police from prosecuting drug abuse and drug dealing. <\/p>\n<p>Since the passage of\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.ca.gov\/prop47.htm\">Prop 47<\/a>\u00a0in 2014, drug possession crimes that were once felonies are now considered misdemeanors in California. Even drug possession with clear intent to sell has been decriminalized, so police no longer have an incentive to bust drug dealers. As a result, California police departments have radically scaled back their narcotics units, a law enforcement source told The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Berlinn said she and a friend recently went looking for a young addict on behalf of his mother. The San Francisco Police Department declined comment.<\/p>\n<p>The MADD moms conceived their billboard last month after Breed\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/sanfrancisco.cbslocal.com\/2022\/03\/14\/sf-mayor-london-breed-european-trip-tourism-pandemic-recovery\/\">went to Europe<\/a>\u00a0for a 10-day trip to promote tourism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the mayor went to Europe to ask tourists to come we felt\u2026 how can you bring tourists into this environment?\u201d said McDonald. \u201cIt isn\u2019t safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some San Francisco businesses contend the billboard could hurt the local hospitality industry. I\u2019m not saying it isn\u2019t there, but it\u2019s not as common as the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> portrays.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s the one who went with Mayor Breed to Europe,\u201d said McDonald, who works as an administrative assistant, adding that MADD is \u201clooking to take these ads international if something doesn\u2019t change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Berlinn adds that addicts like her son are human beings who need compassion and help. It humanized him [in their eyes], I guess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was when I realized I needed to speak up for the homeless, the addicted, and the mentally ill, as Corey would stick up for the underdog.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have families who love them.
