This time around Sonic and his friends must take on Dr. Robotnik and his cohort Knuckles as he attempts to harness the power of the Master Emerald and use it to take over the world. If the currently projections for this weekend prove to be correct, that puts the film\u2019s combined opening worldwide gross at just short of $100 million, something that very few post-pandemic movies have managed to achieve.<br \/>\n<!-- Zone: character count repeatable. --><br \/>\nA sequel is already in production, although Jim Carrey\u2019s recent talk of retirement has put into doubt whether he will be back for the threequel. The movie\u2019s producers have made it clear that they do believe he will be back in <em>Sonic 3<\/em> providing they deliver a good enough script. In the event that Carrey doesn\u2019t return, the part of Robotnik would not be recast.<br \/>\n <!-- No winning ad found for zone: word count #3! --><br \/>\nIn addition to the second sequel, Paramount also announced that a spinoff series centering on Knuckles will be heading to their Paramount+ platform, with Idris Elba returning to provide the voice of the echidna once more.
