No one knows what will happen if the newly organized workers try to change that model or disrupt operations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>If?<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ever wonder why the Plaza Hotel\u2019s landmarked\u00a0Oak Room and Oak Bar are closed except for private events? Thank unaffordable contact terms imposed by Local 6 of the Hotel and Motel Trades Council.<\/p>\n<p>Why are Broadway tickets so expensive?\u00a0Musicians Local 802 has a historical stranglehold on orchestra staffing. There\u2019s even a rule that every show <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/content.time.com\/time\/subscriber\/article\/0,33009,913556,00.html\">must use a minimum number of performers<\/a> based on a theater\u2019s size, but not on how many performers are actually needed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Just emerging from a pandemic, the last thing New Yorkers need is another union to take away worker's motivation.\" class=\"wp-image-21813369\" width=\"618\" height=\"411\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1233 1236w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=925 927w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=618 618w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=308 309w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/starbucks-unionizing.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\"\/><figcaption>As New York emerges from the pandemic, the last thing the struggling city needs is more unions to sap workers of motivation.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Union featherbedding was a major reason why the Second Avenue Subway was the \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/12\/28\/nyregion\/new-york-subway-construction-costs.html\">most expensive subway mile on earth<\/a>\u201d\u00a0\u2014 costing $2.5 billion per mile compared to a similar project in Paris that cost just $450 million per mile.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a>paper Guild belonged to the cabal of print-industry unions that drove four New York daily newspapers out of business in the 1960s\u00a0and came <em>thisclose<\/em> to doing the same to the New York Post in 1993 \u2014 a calamity averted only when union locals representing printers, pressmen, drivers and other crafts smartly chose not to sign onto the Guild\u2019s suicidal strike mission.<\/p>\n<p>Unions suck the economy dry in the guise of helping to provide hard-working stiffs a living wage. Public-employee union contracts guarantee members pension and medical coverage unavailable to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public, and drain precious state and city funds for the benefit of a fortunate few. Meanwhile, as watchdog site <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unionfacts.com\/article\/crime-and-corruption\/\">Unionfacts.com puts it<\/a>, \u201cThe American labor movement . . .  is still plagued by rampant corruption, embezzlement, racketeering and influence from numerous organized crime organizations.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"embed-wrapper twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The moment Amazon workers at the JFK8 warehouse declared victory in their vote to form the first Amazon union in the United States <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Fr92Wz1LIN\">pic.twitter.com\/Fr92Wz1LIN<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kei Pritsker (@KeiPritsker) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KeiPritsker\/status\/1509934775250964491?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But my loathing for unions\u00a0is mostly based on life experience. Time and again, I saw union colleagues scour\u00a0contract language in search of every loophole to do less work than a job requires. He pampers employees with stock-sharing \u201cpartnerships\u201d and other benefits rare in fast-food operations.<\/p>\n<p>It remains to be seen how much more his Roastery workers will demand.
