Kathy Hochul\u2019s proposed extension of mayoral control was left out of the state\u2019s new $220 billion budget, which was passed Saturday, nine days after the April 1 deadline.<\/p>\n<p>During a pair of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earances, Adams expressed gratitude that lawmakers and the governor enacted some of his priorities as part of the state\u2019s fiscal year 2023 spending plan \u2014 but also asked legislators to grant him \u201cmayoral accountability\u201d over Big Apple public education before it expires in June. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to look at some of the W\u2019s, because we\u2019re walking away with some points on the board,\u201d he said on PIX 11, ticking off additional childcare funding and tweaks to progressive criminal justice policies enacted in 2019. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut let\u2019s be clear: there\u2019s more to do. And we have to deal with the issues around school governance. And the last one is crucial to me is mayoral\u00a0control. In 2017, de Blasio\u00a0was granted mayoral control for two years, and in 2019,\u00a0he received a three-year extension\u00a0through June 30, 2022. <\/p>\n<p>Mayoral school control was initially pushed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg and approved by state lawmakers in 2002. The change also turned the Department of Education into a city agency, eliminating the locally elected community school boards.\u00a0Under the previous system, the seven members of the Board of Education \u2014 five appointed by the borough presidents and two by the mayor \u2014 chose the chancellor and were in charge of public school policy.<\/p>\n<p>New\u00a0Schools Chancellor David Banks\u00a0labeled the arrangement prior to mayoral control a \u201cbroken system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams has made the case that Albany should keep control of Big Apple public schools in his hands so New Yorkers can easily identify who is responsible for local public education and hold City Hall accountable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery agency in our city, the mayor is responsible, you want to point to your mayor.
