Six seconds later he came to and found all of his limbs had been blown off.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy baby girl \u2014 am I ever going to see her again?\u201d he asked as a medic tied tourniquets on both of his arms and legs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Four days later, he woke up in the hospital: He\u2019d become one of five soldiers from the Afghanistan and Iraq wars to survive a quadruple amputation. Someone had to feed me, and then I got my own arm to feed myself, and then I was able to start walking again, and get my life back,\u201d he said. He and his infant daughter ended up learning to walk at the same time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow she\u2019s 10, and she doesn\u2019t remember me with my limbs,\u201d said Mills.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A decade has now passed since April 10, 2012, when Mills miraculously survived the IED blast: This weekend, the now 34-year-old celebrated his tenth annual Alive Day.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me it\u2019s a day of reflection on what\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened and how far we\u2019ve come since my wife got that phone call not knowing if I was going to live or die,\u201d said the now-retired Mills, who has since become a motivational speaker, author and business owner. \u201cI used to hate this day, but I realized how grateful I am to celebrate, because those injuries should\u2019ve ended my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/quadriplegic-soldier-alive-day-02.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"travis mills 10th alive day\" class=\"wp-image-21836452\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/quadriplegic-soldier-alive-day-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/quadriplegic-soldier-alive-day-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/quadriplegic-soldier-alive-day-02.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Mills with his wife, Kelsey, and their two children.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">The Travis Mills Foundation<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the years since nearly dying, Mills has committed himself to sharing his experience as a testament to the incredible human ability to survive even the most horrific ordeals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell people the two life lessons I\u2019ve lived by are: Don\u2019t dwell on the past, but reminisce it, and you can\u2019t always control your situation but you can always control your attitude,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In addition to telling his tale through his 60-odd annual speaking gigs across the globe, Mills has also written a book and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/travisthemovie.com\/\">starred in a documentary<\/a> about it. As well, he started the Travis Mills Foundation, a non-profit which, among other resources and programs, offers an all-expenses paid healing retreat to veterans injured in active duty or as a result of their service to the nation.
