They even invaded the airwaves with LFO\u2019s 1999 hit \u201cSummer Girls,\u201d which featured the line: \u201cI like girls that wear Abercrombie &amp; Fitch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was this huge explosion. Bogged down by bad press, legal issues and its reluctance to move with the ever-changing times, it had fallen out of fashion by the late aughts.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sex_sells\"><\/span>Sex sells<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The original Abercrombie &amp; Fitch was founded in 1892 in Manhattan by David T. Abercrombie and catered to upper-crust sportsmen like Teddy Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway. In the 1970s, it filed for Chapter 11, changed hands and in 1988 it was bought by Les Wexner\u2019s the Limited Brands. Campaigns and catalogs featured models like <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/02\/17\/jamie-dornan-did-nude-modeling-for-abercrombie-fitch\/?_ga=2.73006675.1357796619.1649352637-13376124.1649352637\">Malin Akerman, Jamie Dornan<\/a>, Channing Tatum and Jennifer Lawrence before they became famous in various states of undress. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the earliest brands to really merge youth culture and sex <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal was really Calvin Klein,\u201d Robin Givhan, Washington Post senior critic at large, says in the documentary. \u201cWhat Abercrombie did was they made this middle ground between the sex that Calvin Klein was selling and the all-American preppiness that Ralph Lauren was selling. Just aspirational enough but not so expensive that it was out of reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 1996, Jeffries took it public, and the company was rolling in dough.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the first week that I worked at Abercrombie &amp; Fitch, the HR rep talked about how you could write Abercrombie &amp; Fitch with dog s\u2013t and put it on a baseball hat and sell it for $40. She was like, \u2018That\u2019s where we are right now. Jeffries was an extreme,\u201d Givhan says. <\/p>\n<p>Christopher Clayton, a former A&amp;F recruiter, confirmed this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a manager at Abecrombie, they teach you very early on about recruiting,\u201d Clayton says in the documentary. \u201cYou have to recruit but not only do you have to recruit, you have to recruit good-looking people. \u2018This is what good-looking looks like.\u2019 We literally had a book.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For example, the company\u2019s \u201caesthetic manual\u201d maintained that classic, natural hairstyles were acceptable. Dreadlocks on either men or women were not. They sold one <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.courant.com\/news\/connecticut\/hc-xpm-2002-04-20-0204200147-story.html\">featuring stereotypical caricatures of Asian men<\/a> with the slogan, \u201cWong Brothers Laundry Service.\u201d The tagline read: \u201cTwo Wongs can make it white.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It caused a firestorm and led to massive protests, especially from Asian Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The brand apologized and burned the shirts.<\/p>\n<p>However, a year later, the brand found itself in legal hot water.<\/p>\n<p>The film features interviews with Asian, Black and Latino former employees, who recalled how, little by little, their hours were cut back. Jennifer Sheahan, an Asian American woman who worked in a California location, said she approached her assistant manager who was also Asian American. <\/p>\n<p>\u201c[He] said, \u2018The real reason is because after the corporate blitz, one of the people from corporate went around and noticed a bunch of Asian people in the store. They said, \u2018You need to have more staff that looks like this.\u2019 They pointed to an Abercrombie poster. It was a Caucasian model,\u201d Sheahan says, adding that she was deeply hurt by the incident.<\/p>\n<p>Sheahan was one of the plaintiffs who filed a class-action lawsuit alleging discriminatory hiring practices against minorities and women.<\/p>\n<p>The following year, the company settled and agreed to change their recruiting and hiring practices. <\/p>\n<p>But the company hadn\u2019t learned its lesson. In 2009, a Muslim teen alleged the company wouldn\u2019t hire her because she wore a hijab. He did not participate in the documentary.<\/p>\n<p>The retailer was further tarnished by its association with Weber, who had shot its campaigns and was swept up in the #MeToo reckoning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very well known with Bruce that he liked young men,\u201d said Daharsh of the photographer who was responsible for shaping the brand\u2019s aesthetic. <\/p>\n<p>Since 2017, Weber has been <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/08\/31\/fashion-photographer-bruce-weber-settles-sex-assault-suit\/\">accused in two lawsuits of groping male models<\/a>, including one who says he was victimized during a 2009 Abercrombie shoot. (Weber settled both lawsuits for undisclosed sums).<\/p>\n<p>Bobby Blanski, who modeled for the brand, recalled in the film that Weber invited him over for dinner. He declined, and less than two minutes later, the phone rang with bad <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>. He had had been cut and sent home.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn that instant I was done,\u201d Blanski says in the doc.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement issued last week, the company, which now extols inclusivity as a core value, said: \u201cWhile the problematic elements of that era have already been subject to wide and valid criticism over the years, we want to be clear that they are actions, behaviors and decisions that would not be permitted or tolerated at the company now.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
