The Herbig-Haro Jet HH24 (2015)<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<h1><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CFive_mind-blowing_Hubble_Space_Telescope_images_from_the_past_decade%E2%80%9D\"><\/span>&#8220;Five mind-blowing Hubble Space Telescope images from the past decade&#8221;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>NASA\u2019s Hubble Space Telescope has captured many stunning images over its lifetime \u2013 here are five of the most mind-blowing.<\/p>\n<p>First conceived in the 1940s, the Hubble Space Telescope (or just Hubble for short) was launched by the US space agency on April 24, 1990.<\/p>\n<p>Named after astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble (1889\u20131953), the instrument currently hovers about 340 miles above Earth\u2019s surface and completes 15 orbits a day.<\/p>\n<p>It is one of NASA\u2019s four great observatories, along with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous scientific observations that have furthered man\u2019s understanding of the universe are can be credited to Hubble.<\/p>\n<p>And while the telescope\u2019s list of achievements is long, some of its most notable feats include helping astronomers determine the age of the universe and observing the rate at which it is expanding.<\/p>\n<p>NASA has called the instrument one of humanity\u2019s greatest scientific inventions.<\/p>\n<p>Since its launch, the device has made\u00a0more than one million\u00a0observations.<\/p>\n<p>Many of which include detailed pictures of the birth and death of stars, and galaxies billions of light-years away.<\/p>\n<p>Below we share some of the most mind-blowing images the device has captured in the past decade.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_The_Butterfly_nebula_2020\"><\/span>1. Kastner (RIT)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps one of the most stunning images of NGC 6302, or the \u201cButterfly Nebula,\u201d this photograph was released by NASA on June 18, 2020.<\/p>\n<p>It depicts the Butterfly Nebula across a complete spectrum of light, from near-ultraviolet to near-infrared to help \u201cresearchers better understand the mechanics at work in its technicolor \u2018wings\u2019 of gas,\u201d NASA said.<\/p>\n<p>The star(s) at its center is responsible for the nebula\u2019s wing, which are regions of heated gas of more than 36,000 degrees Fahrenheit.<\/p>\n<p>NGC 6302 is located between 2,500 and 3,800 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_The_Saturn_Opposition_2018\"><\/span>2.
