Coleman had just left his sitcom and was still hugely popular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was over the moon,\u201d writes Shannon, then an NYU student. \u201cIf he signs me, I thought, his clients will be me and Gary Coleman! I\u2019ll have a talent agent who represents Gary Coleman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the fall of 1987, when Shannon was back in school, Randall asked if she wanted to meet him and Coleman for tea at the Plaza Hotel. He was playful at first, tickling me, trying to lie on top of me and smooch me. Then, when I pushed him away and stood up, Gary climbed up on the bed and jumped off, using it as a springboard to launch himself to me, kissing me wildly and sticking his little baby hands under my shirt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d actress says she was able to flip Coleman off the bed, but he repeatedly tried to kiss her. All the pieces began to fit together,\u201d Shannon writes. \u201cI was so excited and started making plans for him. He was going to go dancing at gay clubs. He was going to fall in love. My head went wild with visions of his new life as an openly gay man.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly everything made sense \u2014 the craziness, the drinking, the anger. I realized he hasn\u2019t gotten to be himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it was not to be, Shannon\u2019s father was sick with prostate cancer and it wasn\u2019t until a few months later that she asked him if he thought he might be gay. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/molly-shannon-10.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Shannon has a son and daughter.\" class=\"wp-image-21857311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/molly-shannon-10.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/molly-shannon-10.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/molly-shannon-10.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Shannon has a son and daughter.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">RC\/Mega Agency<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cMost definitely,\u201d he replied, explaining that he knew so beginning in eighth grade. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me his gay life was mostly limited to occasional blow jobs at bars and truck stops,\u201d she writes, noting that her father was born a generation or two too early. \u201cHe couldn\u2019t break out of what was expected of him as a Catholic growing up in Cleveland in the 1930s and \u201940s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the actress\u2019 tough childhood, the overriding theme of the book is gratitude and an incredibly sunny outlook.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel so lucky,\u201d she writes near the end of the book. \u201cI got four and a half years with my mom on Earth. I\u2019m grateful I got that time with her.
