\n Portland\u2019s white police chief quit suddenly on Monday \u2014 and tapp<\/a>ed a black police lieutenant to replace her, saying \u201che\u2019s the exact right person at the exact right moment\u201d for the job, according to a report.<\/p>\n

Jami Resch, who had been top cop in the Oregon city for less than six months, made the announcement in the wake of widespread criticism of the department\u2019s handling of massive protests over the Memorial Day death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, The Oregonian reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have asked Chuck Lovell to step into the role as chief of the police bureau,\u201d Resch said at a press conference Monday. \u201cHe\u2019s the exact right person at the exact right moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lovell, a Portland police officer since 2002, has long been active in the community, serving as a high resource officer and a mentor in the local \u201cBoys to Men\u201d program, the outlet said. He also served as executive assistant to former Police Chief Danielle Outlaw, the first African-American woman to hold the post.<\/p>\n

Lovell said the announcement caught him by surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m humbled,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019m going to show up every day with a servant\u2019s heart. I\u2019m going to listen. I\u2019m going to care about the community and care about people in the organization. All I can do is be me.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said he was disturbed by the videos of Floyd pleading for air for nearly nine minutes while being pinned down by Minneapolis police.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what stuck with me \u2014 the thought that that\u2019s an idea that could exist,\u201d Lovell said. \u201cThe fight is not with each other. The fight is against that idea \u2014 that people, institutions, the agencies that can harbor that feeling in their heart.\u201d<\/p>\n

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler said he was surprised by Resch\u2019s decision, but he was \u201c100 percent confident\u201d that Lovell \u201cis the right person for this job.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cTogether we will work on meaningful, bold reforms,\u201d Wheeler said.<\/p>\n

Resch was named chief last year after Outlaw left to become Philadelphia\u2019s police commissioner.<\/p>\n

She said she made her decision to step down after considering the needs of the city and deciding that a change was needed.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
