How long he is here, well, good luck with that. For now, it is 2020 vision for Leonard Williams, a sturdy defensive tackle traded by the Jets to the Giants, instantly becoming about as polarizing a transaction as one can imagine.<\/p>\n

The thought process by the Giants went like this: Bring in the young and healthy defensive lineman, get him acclimated into the system and, if all goes well, secure him with a multiyear extension.<\/p>\n

The reality of the situation went like this: Williams was a nice but low-impact addition, the Giants knew they wanted to keep him and did so with the franchise tag for $16.1 million. The offseason came and went, no new contract \u2014 or even the hint of a new contract \u2014 materialized and Williams is about to embark on his first full season with the Giants, with a brand-new coaching staff for him to learn and impress.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s always in the player\u2019s interest to get a long-term deal, but that\u2019s something that worked itself out between my agents and the organization,\u2019\u2019 Williams said Friday. \u201cI\u2019m just happ<\/a>y to be here, play with this team again, and learn about the guys that I\u2019ve been with since last year.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

On Oct. 28, the Giants were 2-6 at midseason when they sent a 2020 third-round pick and a 2021 fifth-round pick to the Jets, bringing back Williams, the No. 6-overall selection in the 2015 NFL Draft. The deal was not made with short-sighted goals in mind. Williams was then only 25 years old (he currently is 26), and the Giants saw in him a fixture on their defensive line.<\/p>\n

Surprisingly, it never got to the point where negotiations ever opened up, much less got close or stalemated. The Giants expressed their interest in a multiyear extension to Williams\u2019 camp but there was no response. Perhaps Williams\u2019 camp realized the two sides were not going to see eye-to-eye on the value of the player. The Giants were not going to throw out an extravagant contract proposal to Williams, which essentially would be bidding against themselves.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say it was disappointing,\u2019\u2019 Williams said. \u201cI kind of knew the situation I was coming off of last year. I think it\u2019s actually a good opportunity for myself. I\u2019m looking at it as an opportunity. I\u2019m not looking at it as something that\u2019s bad. I\u2019m looking at it as an opportunity.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

It is an opportunity for Williams to make a good chunk of change this season and try to increase his value, as he is not coming off a season to make anyone open the coffers and break the bank. In seven starts with the Jets, Williams had 20 tackles, five quarterback hits and no sacks. Williams in eight starts for the Giants had 26 tackles, 11 quarterback hits and one half sack. This was not the sort of production that put Williams in a position of strength when it came to contract talks.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say I have something to prove necessarily,\u2019\u2019 Williams said. \u201cI think the coaches know and my teammates know what I bring to the table or I wouldn\u2019t be here. I definitely still feel like I\u2019m playing with a chip on my shoulder at the same time, though. I\u2019m ready to just go out here and play the best that I can. I\u2019m not looking towards the future or next offseason or what\u2019s going to happen a year from now.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

In the here and now, Williams holds a prominent spot in the defensive scheme. He is expected to start on a three-man line with Dalvin Tomlinson and Dexter Lawrence, providing the rock-solid run defense he put on display his first five NFL seasons. Williams has never missed a game<\/a> in his career, so he has durability and youth on his side.<\/p>\n

Williams reported to his first training camp with the Giants and was promptly put on the non-football injury list with what is considered a slight hamstring issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m definitely making strides and doing the best that I can to get out there with my teammates,\u2019\u2019 Williams said.<\/p>\n

New head coach Joe Judge was all for keeping Williams. What happens this season will determine how long the football relationship lasts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t let too much outside noise get to me,\u2019\u2019 Williams said. \u201cI just try to work hard, keep the blinders on and keep working and doing what I can do.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
