Let\u2019s take a look at its drawbacks in more detail\u2014and suggest something better.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Built-in_Organization\"><\/span>No Built-in Organization<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Do you edit multiple notes at once or keep them open for reference? Then you\u2019d probably benefit from a tabbed note-taking <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>lication such as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/notepad-plus-plus.org\/\">Notepad++<\/a> or one with a list of notes like OneNote. With regular old Notepad by itself, you\u2019re left with many individual text files that you need to open in many individual windows and manually organize using folders if you want to keep any semblance of order.<\/p>\n<p>In OneNote, for example, you can create \u201cNotebooks,\u201d which are collections of notes that you can organize by topic. It makes handling many notes for large, unwieldy projects much easier.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Text_Formatting\"><\/span><strong>No Text Formatting<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>While the lack of fancy text formatting\u2014such as italics, bold, centering, bullet points, or changing fonts\u2014is part of Notepad\u2019s charm, it can also be a huge drawback when attempting to organize information within your note document. For a free app with basic formatting capabilities, try WordPad, which ships with Windows 10 and 11. Or you could try Google Docs for a cloud-based solution.<\/p>\n<p>If you need substantial word processing capabilities, try Microsoft Word or the aforementioned Google Docs. And if you like using Notepad for programming, you can get a lot out of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/notepad-plus-plus.org\/\">Notepad++<\/a>, which automatically formats code from different programming languages to make it easier to read.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Cloud_Backup_or_Easy_Multi-Device_Access\"><\/span><strong>No Cloud Backup or Easy Multi-Device Access<br \/><\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Unless you save your Notepad text files to a cloud file service like OneDrive or Dropbox\u2014or keep really good backups\u2014you could easily lose your notes in a mishap. But if you want to search for text among many text files created with Notepad, you\u2019d need to use Windows\u2019 built-in search feature, which is a messy and slow process.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, if you use an app like OneNote or Notepad++, you can easily search for content between note files. With Notepad++, for example, you can even perform powerful find-and-replace actions across many note files at once.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_Encryption_by_Default\"><\/span>No Encryption by Default<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>By default, Notepad\u2019s text files aren\u2019t encrypted or secured in any way. You\u2019d have to manually store them in an encrypted file partition using a tool such as Microsoft\u2019s BitLocker to keep your data safe. In contrast, if you use OneNote, you can <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/office\/protect-notes-with-a-password-in-microsoft-onenote-280af2bf-0959-4889-9191-e326b2bbedee\">password-protect individual notes<\/a> with 128-bit AES encryption.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_Notepad_Instead\"><\/span>Try Notepad++ Instead<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>As mentioned several times above, Notepad++ by Don Ho is a completely free replacement for Notepad with many extra features that are ideal for power users editing text files for configuration or programming.
