The left side of the keyboard features a dedicated volume control wheel, and media keys like Play\/Pause are available when used in conjunction with the function (FN) key.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll also find three buttons spanning the left side of the board; from top to bottom, they control the Mute function, Windows key locking, and RGB lighting brightness level.<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/730577\/what-does-rgb-mean-and-why-is-it-all-over-tech\/\">RGB lighting<\/a> on the NZXT Function Keyboard is respectable but nothing to write home about. If you choose the stock versions, you\u2019ll get ABS shine-through keycaps for an extra pop, whereas custom <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnzxt.com%2Fbuild%2Fkeyboard%2FKB-fac9fc89-e651-478e-b081-ad5e9cd9128f\">NZXT BLD<\/a>\u00a0PBT black or grey keycaps block more light. This is, of course, before you even touch the stock switches.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re a streamer, content creator, or participate in meetings while working from home, you may want to opt for the Gateron Aliaz Silent or Silent Black Ink switches. Be prepared to burn a $70 sized hole in your wallet for the upgrade, though.<\/p>\n<p>If this is your first mechanical keyboard or you\u2019re not accustomed to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/349034\/how-to-silence-your-noisy-mechanical-keyboard\/\">lubed stabilizers<\/a> in general, you\u2019ll likely feel no problems with the Function\u2019s stock switches. And from a technical standpoint, there are no problems. I didn\u2019t notice any <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=rg\/113111&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fapplied-sciences%2Fprojects%2Fanti-ghosting-demo\">ghosting<\/a>, duplicate keystrokes, or immediate switch deterioration. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/310370\/all-those-confusing-mechanical-keyboard-terms-explained\/\">N-key rollover<\/a> is a huge plus for consistency, too. Blue switches are supposed to feel clicky and tactile by design\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean they have to feel stiff and sound sharp due to loose, rattling stabilizers. You can also choose Gateron Red or Gateron Brown switches with NZXT BLD. Thankfully, you have the option to swap them out for any MX-compatible 5-pin switch of your choosing.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_note\"><p><strong>Note:<\/strong> If you decide against customization and opt for a stock Function keyboard, it\u2019ll come equipped with Gateron Red switches.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And sure, the argument can be made that a hot-swappable board shouldn\u2019t be defined by its switches. But if you\u2019re worried about more than matching the accent colors on your NZXT Lift, should you pay $180 for a board that needs upgraded parts from the get-go? If you ask me, the answer is a resounding no.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"NZXT_CAM_Macro_Mapping_and_Lighting_Software\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_2\">NZXT CAM: Macro Mapping and Lighting Software<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>This was a disappointing area for the Function coming from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnzxt.com%2Fproduct%2Flift-black\">NZXT\u2019s Lift Gaming Mouse<\/a>, which had settings that I thought were easy to navigate in its custom lighting and macro configuration software, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fnzxt.com%2Fsoftware%2Fcam\">NZXT CAM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Mac and Linux users, NZXT CAM is only available on Windows\u2014and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fsupport.nzxt.com%2Fhc%2Fen-au%2Farticles%2F4411717773211-Will-CAM-come-to-Linux-or-Mac-OS-\">it doesn\u2019t appear NZXT CAM will be coming to other platforms any time soon<\/a>. Continuing on that note, the macro mapping options leave something to be desired.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t use many keyboard macros, but the few I wanted to set up led me somewhere tucked away.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than using the keyboard that takes up two-thirds of the screen, or even heading to \u201cRemap Keys,\u201d\u00a0 you have to scroll down to the \u201cMacros\u201d section and select the tiny \u201cAdd Macro\u201d button.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-113715\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/03\/7d1a3e04.jpg\" alt=\"NZXT CAM Macro mapping\" width=\"1920\" height=\"993\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>From here, it\u2019s fairly straightforward with a few twists. Give your macro a name, add it, and select your Activation Key. If you want to use the function (FN) key, you\u2019ll need to check the box \u201cUse FN for Activation Key.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Then, record your macro; if you prefer, you can add each function individually and set the delay times manually. From this point, it\u2019s not clear what to do. There\u2019s no \u201cConfirm\u201d button or visual feedback, you just have to back out to the Keyboard screen.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to do some remapping, head to the \u201cRemap Keys\u201d section and drag your selection from Keys, Numbers, or Special onto the key you want to remap. It\u2019s not the most intuitive solution, but it\u2019s not so bad once you understand it.<\/p>\n<p>Onto the RGB lighting software. It\u2019s not bad\u2014you have four customizable on-board profiles to choose from. You can\u2019t create custom lighting effects in NZXT CAM like you can with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/redirect.viglink.com\/?key=204a528a336ede4177fff0d84a044482&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.razer.com%2Fsynapse-3\">Razer Synapse<\/a>, but the available presets (Color Modes) cover most of the bases you\u2019ll want from a gaming keyboard. You\u2019ll find the same options for the NZXT Lift, so you can match RGB presets as well as accent finishes across your peripherals.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Opt_For_Something_Better\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Opt For Something Better<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you have an accent-colored NZXT Lift mouse, the Function with accented keycaps creates a flowing design sure to tie your setup together. Other than that, there are few reasons to purchase an NZXT Function keyboard over something that gives you the same capabilities with a better tactile feel and a smaller price tag, like a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mechanicalkeyboards.com\/shop\/index.php?l=product_detail&amp;p=8807\">Ducky One 3<\/a> or\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.keychron.com\/products\/keychron-q3-qmk-custom-mechanical-keyboard?variant=39773518626905\">Keychron Q3 QMK<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>With a lower price mark, NZXT would\u2019ve hit the nail on the head.
