An English debate is set for May 11 at 8 p.m. ET in Edmonton. A\u00a0French debate will follow on May 25 at 8 p.m. in Montreal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A memo sent to candidates last week and obtained by CBC News indicates that a format for the debates has not yet been set. Candidates will receive a list of topics one week before each debate.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Charest attacks:<\/strong> Speaking of the CPC race, on Sunday, <strong>Jean Charest<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeanCharest_\/status\/1512928458552365062\">let loose<\/a> at frontrunner <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong>, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-conservative-leadership-race-jean-charest\/\">reports.<\/a>\u00a0Charest accused Poilievre of showing insufficient respect for the rule of law, given Poilievre\u2019s enthusiastic support for the \u201cFreedom Convoy.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Mr. Charest\u2019s stronger words coincide with clear signs of momentum in the Poilievre campaign, which is frequently attracting large crowds at stops throughout the country. In a nationally televised interview on Sunday, Mr. Charest took direct aim at Mr. Poilievre.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cEveryone knows that <strong>Pierre Poilievre<\/strong> supported the blockade. \u2026 Well, I\u2019m sorry, if you want to be a leader of a party, if you want to sit in the House of Commons and make laws, you have to obey them,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s not just a failure in leadership. It disqualifies you, as far as I\u2019m concerned, as being someone who thinks, or aspires to be, a leader of a party.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Location, location, location:<\/strong> While Charest was taking aim at Poilievre, Poilievre was taking aim at \u201cgatekeepers,\u201d municipal officials he blames for restricting the supply of housing. The <em>Star<\/em> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/news\/canada\/2022\/04\/11\/pierre-poilievre-did-a-campaign-video-about-this-vancouver-house-heres-the-story-of-how-its-price-climbed-from-265000-to-49-million.html\">an interesting story<\/a> about the $5-million Vancouver house he used to make his point.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bleu peril: Chantal Hebert<\/strong> has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com\/politics\/political-opinion\/2022\/04\/10\/did-jean-charest-see-this-threat-coming-to-his-conservative-leadership-bid.html\">a thoughtful column<\/a> in the <em>Star<\/em> about Charest\u2019s prospects in his home province, which he must dominate in the leadership race if he is to have a chance of stopping Poilievre mania. A big problem for Charest is the rise of\u00a0 <strong>\u00c9ric Duhaime<\/strong>, leader of the new provincial Conservative party, whose supporters are likelier to support Poilievre than Charest.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Over his first year as leader, the party\u2019s rolls have gone from 600 to 51,000 members. Many of them hail from the ranks of federal Conservative sympathizers. An Angus Reid poll released last month revealed that more than half of those who voted for former Conservative leader <strong>Erin O\u2019Toole<\/strong> in Quebec last fall support Duhaime provincially. This is a conservative reservoir that Charest has little hope of t<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ing for his leadership purposes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>CAQ pickup:\u00a0<\/strong>The <strong>Parti Qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois lost<\/strong> a crucial race Monday night, as the CAQ\u2019s <strong>Shirley Dorismond<\/strong> won a by-election in a Montreal suburb, the <em>Gazette<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/montrealgazette.com\/news\/local-news\/pq-lose-key-riding-in-marie-victorin-as-caq-win-byelection?utm_term=Autofeed&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=Twitter#Echobox=1649728059\">reports<\/a>. The by-election was being seen by many as a gauge on the health of the PQ, who ran former NDP MP <strong>Pierre Nantel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fixer trouble: Bob Weber<\/strong> of the Canadian Press has <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnewswatch.com\/2022\/04\/11\/fixer-says-former-alberta-justice-minister-hired-him-to-get-reporters-phone-logs\/#.YlP32HjMKUl\">a lurid tale<\/a> from Alberta, based on emails that seems to show the former justice minister,\u00a0<strong>Jonathan Denis<\/strong>, hired a self-described political fixer to get <strong>access to the phone records of a reporter<\/strong> who had embarrassed the justice minister.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>David Wallace<\/strong> says he was hired by <strong>Jonathan Denis<\/strong> to get the phone records of <strong>Alanna Smith<\/strong>, a former <em>Calgary Herald<\/em> reporter now of The Canadian Press. Wallace said Denis told him he wanted to trace sources Smith had drawn on for a story about whether the size of Denis\u2019s wedding reception broke COVID-19 protocols. In an email from his lawyer, Denis denied that he or his clients talked to Wallace.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The story raises serious legal and ethical questions, and is also extremely interesting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Slave labour?<\/strong> Human-rights groups filed a complaint Sunday with the Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise to investigate allegations that some products sold by 14 Canadian companies are made\u00a0 with forced labour in China, the <em>Globe<\/em> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canadian-watchdog-asked-to-probe-allegations-that-imports-made-with\/?utm_medium=Referrer:+Social+Network+\/+Media&amp;utm_campaign=Shared+Web+Article+Links\">reports<\/a>. The office, which operates at arm\u2019s length from the government, has a mandate to probe wrongdoing linked to overseas corporate conduct in three sectors: mining, petroleum and the garment industry.\u00a0\u00a0Almost all the Canadian companies listed in the complaint are subsidiaries of U.S. or other international firms.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the mouse:<\/strong> In the <em>Post<\/em>, <strong>Colby Cosh<\/strong> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nationalpost.com\/opinion\/colby-cosh-liberals-slip-potentially-odious-copyright-extension-into-back-of-budget\">takes note<\/a>\u00a0of some fine print buried in an annex in the recent budget, which will extend copyright protection to 70 from 50 years, in line with our recent trade deal and the wishes of representatives of a powerful cartoon mouse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where is the money?<\/strong> Absent from the budget was mention of a timeline for a campaign promise to transfer mental health money to provinces and territories, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ctvnews.ca\/politics\/mental-health-funding-to-provinces-territories-through-new-transfer-absent-from-budget-1.5857894?cid=sm%3Atrueanthem%3A%7B%7Bcampaignname%7D%7D%3Atwitterpost%E2%80%8B&amp;taid=6254af7678bc1b00016515a0&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">reports<\/a>. The Liberals promised the $4.5 billion cash infusion over five years during the federal election campaign. The Canadian Mental Health Association was \u201cvery disappointed\u201d not to see it in the budget.\u00a0<strong>Carolyn Bennett<\/strong> told CTV in January that she is consulting with her provincial and territorial counterparts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New lawyer:<\/strong> Freedom Convoy organizer <strong>Tamara Lich<\/strong> has a new lawyer\u2014<strong>Lawrence Greenspon<\/strong>, a high-profile Ottawa defence attorney, CTV <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ottawa.ctvnews.ca\/high-profile-ottawa-lawyer-lawrence-greenspon-hired-to-defend-freedom-convoy-leader-tamara-lich-1.5858059?cid=sm%3Atrueanthem%3Actvottawa%3Atwitterpost&amp;taid=6254c1062c26f70001946eec&amp;utm_campaign=trueAnthem%3A+Trending+Content&amp;utm_medium=trueAnthem&amp;utm_source=twitter\">reports<\/a>.\u00a0Lich was arrested Feb. 17 and is charged with mischief, counselling mischief, intimidation, counselling intimidation, counselling obstruction of police and obstructing police. She\u00a0was released on bail March 7.<\/p>\n<p><strong>U.S. report due:<\/strong> In the aftermath of <strong>Pope Francis\u2019s<\/strong> apology to Canadian Indigenous Peoples, their counterparts in the United States are anxiously anticipating a federal report on residential schools, CP <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thestarphoenix.com\/news\/world\/as-popes-apology-echoes-u-s-indigenous-boarding-school-probe-follows-canadas-lead\">reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Deb Haaland<\/strong> ordered the Indian Boarding School Initiative last June, shortly after becoming the first Indigenous secretary of the interior in U.S. history, and just days after a B.C. First Nation announced the grim discovery of human remains at a former residential school.
