The companionship of it is so beautiful,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hughlaurie?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\">Laurie,<\/a> 62, told The Post<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt reminded me of \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pkgYjeFYQ2c\">The Thin Man<\/a>,\u2019 another couple I just adore spending time with,\u201d he said, alluding to Nick and Nora Charles (William Powell and Myrna Loy in the six-movie franchise spanning the \u201930s and \u201940s). \u201cThey\u2019re just so sublime, and I bet Agatha Christie read \u2018The Thin Man,\u2019 which was published the year before she wrote [\u2018Why Didn\u2019t They Ask Evans\u2019], and thought, \u2018I wouldn\u2019t mind trying something that\u2019s got a bit of that spirit to it.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p>The 10-time Emmy nominee (\u201cHouse,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=JfzzLqzEf-I\">\u201cThe Night Manager,\u201d <\/a>\u201cVeep\u201d) wrote, directed and co-stars in \u201cWhy Didn\u2019t They Ask Evans?,\u201d now streaming on BritBox. It\u2019s set in 1936 in a small town on the Welsh coastline where Bobby Jones (Will Poulter), the son of the local vicar, hears a scream while caddying \u2014 and, on the rocks below, discovers the broken body of a well-dressed man. His final words, \u201cWhy didn\u2019t they ask Evans?,\u201d sets the tone for the oft-whimsical series as Bobby and his childhood friend (and secret crush), Lady Francis \u201cFrankie\u201d Derwent (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/lucyboynton1\/?hl=en\">Lucy Boynton<\/a>) endeavor to solve the labyrinthian mystery involving fake identities, multiple murders, drug addiction and more. <\/p>\n<p>They\u2019re aided by Bobby\u2019s navy buddy, Knocker Beadon (Jonathan Jules); Laurie, in a small role, plays Dr. Nicholson, who runs a sanitarium for the mentally disturbed \u2026 and might have sinister intentions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/why-didn-t-they-ask-evans-7.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Hugh Laurie as Dr. Nicholson in &quot;Why Didn't They Ask Evans?&quot; He's dressed in a suit circa 1936 and wearing a black hat and bowtie.\" class=\"wp-image-21876549\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/why-didn-t-they-ask-evans-7.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/why-didn-t-they-ask-evans-7.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/why-didn-t-they-ask-evans-7.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Hugh Laurie as Dr. Nicholson in \u201cWhy Didn\u2019t They Ask Evans?\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">(BBC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe central mystery is so beautifully revealed in the novel and I hope we\u2019ve done it justice,\u201d Laurie said. \u201cI wanted to stay out of [acting in the series] \u2014 I just wanted to concentrate on the bit I\u2019d given the last year-and-a-half to \u2014 but then it was pointed out to me, I don\u2019t know if someone was blowing smoke or not, that it might look as if I want not committed to the whole project if I didn\u2019t \u2018show up.\u2019 So at some point I had to put on a hat and get in front of the camera and be a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s much more likely is that the producers just thought they could save themselves a few quid,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019d be cheap and available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laurie said he didn\u2019t have Boynton (\u201cBohemian Rhapsody,\u201d \u201cModern Love,\u201d \u201cThe Ipcress File\u201d) in mind for the role of Frankie, at least not initially. \u201cI knew she had to be fairly nimble to be able to operate at a fairly high rate of knots \u2026 and Lucy came into my mind during the writing \u2026 and when I finally met her, on Zoom, she was wonderful. The more stuff of hers that I watched I was more convinced that she was Frankie. She has an intelligence and sense of of adventure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI reminded her that we had met before \u2026 and she had no memory of meeting me,\u201d he said, tongue planted firmly in cheek. \u201cSo I was kind of crushed. You like to think you\u2019ve left an impression.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laurie had not met Poulter (<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=69zOFccYt3o\">\u201cDopesick\u201d<\/a>) before the project, but certainly knew about him and his work. \u201cIt sounds a bit weird and incestuous but we have the same agent, and he was banging on to me about Will Poulter for years before this,\u201d he said. \u201cHe was always a figure in my mind and I kept a lookout for him. I could absolutely believe that [Bobby], like me, would become absolutely besotted with Frankie. I mean, who wouldn\u2019t?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There have been several other TV adaptations of \u201cWhy Didn\u2019t They Ask Evans?\u201d but Laurie said he did not watch them before embarking on his own version.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was better,\u201d he said. \u201cTheoretically you ought to be able to look at other people\u2019s work and say, \u2018Well, I can maybe avoid that mistake\u2019 or \u2018That was a good way of doing it\u2019 and you can \u2018borrow,&#8217;\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think that\u2019s risky. It has to take on its own life and momentum and can\u2019t be dictated by other people\u2019s versions of something. It sort of hobbles it, in a way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t want there to be patches of territory you can\u2019t visit or feel desperate you should visit.
