Talbert said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am deeply ashamed of myself for my behavior and so sorry for the pain I\u2019ve caused my family, my friends, all the good people who needlessly suffered because of my story and those who worked so hard to try to help me,\u201d Papini said in a statement to The Post provided through her attorney, William Portanova.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI will work the rest of my life to make amends for what I have done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The court has yet to schedule a date when Papini will enter her guilty plea. She has been out on $120,000 bond. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not clear how much time Papini will get, but she faces a maximum of five years behind bars on the count of making false statements and 20 years for the mail fraud charge, the Eastern District of California US Attorney\u2019s office said. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-637.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"A missing sign in Mountain Gate, California for Sherri Papini.\" class=\"wp-image-21880039\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-637.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-637.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-637.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sherri Papini was facing up to 25 years in prison. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Andrew Seng\/The Sacramento Bee\/AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe actual sentence \u2026 will be determined at the discretion of the court after consideration of any applicable statutory factors and the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, which take into account a number of variables,\u201d the office said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Portanova, who took over the case in late March from Papini\u2019s former defense attorney, Michael Borges, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/amp.sacbee.com\/news\/local\/crime\/article260342530.html\">told the Sacramento Bee<\/a> that the plea deal comes as they are \u201ctaking the case in an entirely new direction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that has happened before stops today,\u201d said Portanova. <\/p>\n<p>Papini, 39, of Redding, was arrested on March 3 after prosecutors said the mom of two lied when she told investigators that she was kidnapped at gunpoint by two Hispanic women, and even provided a false description to an FBI sketch artist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She also told investigators the women beat her up, chopped up her blond hair and played mariachi music in the vehicle before she was finally set free on Thanksgiving in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said Papini made the whole thing up and was instead staying at an apartment in Costa Mesa, Calif. with her ex-boyfriend, James Reyes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-638.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Sherri Papini walks out from the Sacramento County Main Jail after granted bail.\" class=\"wp-image-21880041\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-638.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-638.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/sherri-papini-638.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Sherri Papini walks out from the Sacramento County Main Jail after granted bail.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Andri Tambunan for The New York Post<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>According to the complaint, an Honest Green Tea bottle found in a Costa Mesa trash can matched Reyes\u2019s DNA collected from Papini\u2019s clothing, which eventually helped officials determine she was with Reyes.<\/p>\n<p>Cell phone records also indicated that Reyes exchanged text messages with Papini the morning she disappeared, prosecutors said in the criminal complaint.<\/p>\n<p>Nether Reyes, nor Papini\u2019s husband, Keith, have been charged. Shasta County Sheriff Michael Johnson said last month that he believed the \u201csuper mom\u201d did not act alone. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI certainly wouldn\u2019t be surprised,\u201d Johnson said in an interview with ABC\u2019s  \u201cGood Morning America\u201d when asked on March 7 if potential new charges against Papini or anyone else close to the case. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t necessarily say I suspect it. It\u2019s gonna go to the grand jury, they\u2019ll dole out the indictments that they feel is appropriate.
