It won\u2019t surprise you to know that I get a lot of press releases and interview requests about new ebikes coming to market. There are plenty of ebikes being released, and plenty of big brands with lots of funding and strategies for consumer marketing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I wanted to write about Mokumono for a different reason: they\u2019re doing things differently, things that other ebike brands can learn from, or in fact, any startups involved with manufacturing \u2013 whether that\u2019s hardware, wearables, electric devices, or more. I spoke to co-founder, Tom Schiller, to find out more.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Commit_to_local_manufacturing\"><\/span><strong>Commit to local manufacturing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Okay, there\u2019s a reasonable chunk of people who don\u2019t care if their ebikes are manufactured in Taiwan or China. And the vast majority are \u2014 including Cowboy and VanMoof.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, there\u2019s nothing wrong with this per se. Since 2020, it has weathered compulsory shutdowns, material shortages (especially semiconductor chips), bottlenecked ports, and a shortage of long-distance truck drivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December last year, electric bicycle company Ride1Up told customers in an <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/electrek.co\/2021\/12\/18\/still-waiting-on-a-delayed-e-bike-or-anything-else-its-probably-stuck-on-one-of-these-ships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">email<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> obtained by Electrek that bikes <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing from Asia to the US would not arrive by Christmas. They were, in fact, stuck on a ship waiting for unloading for almost a month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019d piss anyone off.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mokumono is responding to this challenge, with 90% of their new bike\u2019s parts sourced locally, including the front fork and handlebar, making the brand way less dependent on Asian production \u2014 and vulnerable to the precariousness of international shipping.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The company aims to get to 100% European manufacturing (but doesn\u2019t have a goal date as of yet).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019re not the only ones doing this. The tide is turning, with Belgian ebike company Ampler <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ebiketips.road.cc\/content\/news\/ampler-releases-two-lightweight-urban-e-bikes-the-juna-and-the-axel-3655\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">developing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their frames and the electronic system fully in-house. But this is at the expense of partnering with local businesses, that don\u2019t necessarily work for the bicycle industry. And missing this cross-vertical innovation that might be your company\u2019s biggest competitive downfall.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similar to Mokumono\u2019s first models \u2014 the <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mokumono.com\/mokumono-delta-s\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delta S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/mokumono.com\/mokumono-delta-c\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delta C<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 the frame for the Polder is produced by pressing aluminum sheets into form using techniques commonly utilized in the car industry, after which the two frame halves are robotically welded together.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process was developed with tech production partner Witte van Moort in Vriezenveen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schiller told me, <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a lot of manufacturing companies in the Netherlands that just don\u2019t work for the bicycle industry per se, or not at all. But if you have a clear idea, they\u2019re more than willing to give it a go.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you consider that Ampler hails from Estonia, Rad Power Bikes from the US, and Cowboy from Belgium. That could bring a lot of local R&amp;D in play, as well as potentially reinvigorating local industries \u2014 heck there\u2019s probably government funding there somewhere as well.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roach is to find companies that market themselves as helping develop new prototypes and products:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need someone willing to give something new a try. More profits without selling to a bike shop (which can potentially mean cheaper bikes for customers). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also means you can get a good grip on consumer buying behavior. On top of that, you aren\u2019t beholden to situations like the pandemic where bike shops had to close, or if a bike shop goes out of business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Schiller, Mokumono has decided to focus on getting the Netherlands right, before expanding to other regions. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He shared that D2C also means \u201cif problems arise, we know im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>tely, and then we\u2019ll find a solution in the first instance, but also for the next production batch, so that doesn\u2019t the problem doesn\u2019t occur again.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This helps build brand reputation and protects companies from retailer mishaps like stores running out of stock or an online store that has a site malfunction \u2014 which buyers may associate negatively with the brand. Or, a COVID shutdown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But D2C is challenging. While you get a deluge of customer data, you need to know how to channel it effectively using a CRM, to direct effective marketing campaigns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, a buyer persona needs to be more than a tall male aged 30 to 40, for example! And, if your ebikes suit a range of different heights, this may mean marketing to different cohorts simultaneously. For instance, Molumono\u2019s frame suits riders starting at 165 cm (5\u20194) up to 195 cm (6\u20194). The trunk can be opened. This enables battery removal for charging, replacements, or upgrades using third-party batteries.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a pivot for Mokumono, with a reason. Schiller explained that the battery is going to be the weakest point of an ebike:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of manufacturers design a proprietary battery. But what if they decide not to make that battery anymore, or the original creator goes out of business? Then the whole bike becomes obsolete.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being open to third-party batteries means that an ebike expands its lifetime. It will allow it to stay on the road potentially for decades.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a related commitment against planned obsolescence, Schiller shared that, with the Polder, the company also introduced its \u2018right to ride\u2019 principle: it commits to keeping all parts of the bike available and in stock for ten years. I\u2019d love to see all manufacturers do this.
