Kathy Hochul\u2019s team is suggesting she mull over a handful of non-white state lawmakers who represent New York City \u2014 including one she previously considered to be her second-in-command \u2014 to replace ex-Lt. Gov. Brian Benjamin, The Post has learned. <\/p>\n<p>State Sen. Jamaal Bailey (D-Bronx), the head of the Bronx Democratic Party, Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz (D-Queens), and state Sen. Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) are among the names being floated for Hochul to tap for the job after Benjamin resigned Tuesday following his federal indictment in an alleged campaign finance scheme, three sources told The Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Before Hochul was\u00a0sworn in as governor\u00a0in late August,\u00a0The Post reported\u00a0that she was eyeing both Bailey, 39, and Benjamin, 45, to replace her as lieutenant governor. Comrie, a former City Council member and deputy Queens borough president who is black, was not previously considered for the position. <\/p>\n<p>Cruz \u2014 a progressive Latina who \u201creally wanted\u201d the job in August before Hochul opted to select Benjamin\u00a0as LG \u2014 has already\u00a0been vetted in recent weeks to potentially replace Benjamin, another Democratic source said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jamaal-bailey.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Senator Jamaal Bailey speaking.\" class=\"wp-image-21892926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jamaal-bailey.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jamaal-bailey.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/jamaal-bailey.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Hochul is considering Senator Jamaal Bailey, sources said.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Robert Miller<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Karines Reyes (D-Bronx), a 37-year-old Latina and\u00a0former nurse, is another potential LG contender, according to the source.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Former Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., who Hochul\u2019s team also considered for the post in August, was not interested in taking the job then and\u00a0likely\u00a0still prefers to \u201cride into the sunset,\u201d a separate Democratic source close to him told The Post on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard that Ruben took himself out, he was not interested. He spoke to the governor a couple of times [in August],\u201d the source said of Diaz, a former state Assemblyman. \u201cHe was ready for the private sector.\u00a0He didn\u2019t run for mayor\u00a0and then this came up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe took it seriously. But his feelings that he wanted to ride into the sunset didn\u2019t change,\u201d they added. \u201cHe\u2019s not interested in being the lieutenant governor and if he wasn\u2019t then, he\u2019s not now. He doesn\u2019t want to be in public life anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Leroy-comrie.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"State Senator Leroy Comrie\" class=\"wp-image-21893013\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Leroy-comrie.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Leroy-comrie.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Leroy-comrie.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>State Senator Leroy Comrie is among the names Hochul is considering for the job.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Dan Herrick<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Though Benjamin stepped down Tuesday, the scandal-scarred former state lawmaker is currently still on the ballot for the June Democratic gubernatorial primary, and it may\u00a0prove a difficult task\u00a0to yank him off after he was nominated alongside Hochul\u00a0at February\u2019s New York Democratic Party convention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe only way\u00a0to get off the ballot is death, disqualification\u00a0or moving out of state,\u201d state Board of Elections spokesman John Conklin said Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>During a radio <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance Wednesday morning, Hochul said she is \u201clooking into\u201d whether she can replace Benjamin as her running mate following his arrest, though she admitted it was unclear whether she would be stuck with her former second-in-command or could\u00a0have his name removed\u00a0from the June 28 Democratic primary ballot to avoid being\u00a0tainted by association.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know right now, at this time. We know this is something we\u2019re looking into,\u201d Hochul said on WNYC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe laws are very complicated,\u201d she added. \u201cBut that\u2019s something we\u2019re examining right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When host Brian Lehrer suggested that Benjamin disqualify himself by temporarily moving to New Jersey, Hochul responded, \u201cYou give him a call, Brian, and you can tell him that\u2019s your thought. I don\u2019t have control over that.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Catalina-cruz.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz of Queens speaks at a press conference on ICE operating in New York City. \" class=\"wp-image-21893136\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Catalina-cruz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Catalina-cruz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Catalina-cruz.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Assemblywoman Catalina Cruz of Queens is among the names being floated around. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">William Farrington<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBut yeah, that is the option, I think \u2026 because death is the other one,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I think it\u2019s running for another office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A state Democratic Party source told The Post on Wednesday that party officials were weighing whether Benjamin could relocate to the federal district of Northern Georgia or Eastern\u00a0Virginia, where he was granted permission to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> after being released from custody on a $250,000 bond.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, he has a nexus with these other states,\u201d the Democratic insider said.<\/p>\n<p>The possibility of having Benjamin run for another office is likely impossible, the source said, adding, \u201cthe options are all bad until we figure it out.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A top Democratic state election official told The Post that one way for Hochul to get Benjamin off her ticket is to request\u00a0the Democratic-majority state legislature pass a law allowing the party to reconvene, remove\u00a0him from the ticket and subsequently choose a replacement.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/kathy-hochul-benjamin-replacement-09.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"New York Gov. No one wants a candidate on the ballot who is not a candidate,\u201d Kellner added. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of an insult to the voters to leave a candidate on the ballot in this situation.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Hochul denied speculation that she \u201cmight try to poach\u201d former city councilwoman and Brooklyn deputy borough president Diana Reyna, the\u00a0running mate of rival candidate\u00a0and outgoing US Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-Long Island), as her next lieutenant governor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve not even heard that rumor,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s \u2014 so, no. I\u2019m \u2014 this is very early in the process. Obviously, there\u2019s a lot of people to consider, and \u2026 there\u2019s been absolutely no decisions made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During a Zoom press conference on Wednesday, Reyna evaded the question when asked if she would accept a potential offer to replace Benjamin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are hypotheticals until primary day, we don\u2019t know what will happen, right?\u201d she said. \u201cI just want you to know I haven\u2019t received a call like that. We had been told that everything that had risen up had been addressed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, everything was clean, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re told in the process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hochul went on to concede the vetting process used ahead of picking Benjamin is in need of an upgrade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly, we need to have a different process, a more strengthened, streamlined process that can get us to more detail than we had at the time,\u201d the governor said. \u201cSo I [was] not aware that there had been investigations from federal authorities or even the district attorney\u2019s office at that time. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s\u00a0resignation last year\u00a0over a sexual harassment scandal.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Hochul, a moderate Democrat from Buffalo, said she wanted someone from New York City \u201cwho understands the challenges firsthand\u201d as part of her plan to \u201chave a very diverse administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Benjamin\u2019s defense lawyers denied Tuesday that Benjamin tried to arrange a $50,000 charitable state grant in exchange for more than $50,000 in illegal campaign contributions, saying he would \u00a0\u201cfocus his energies on explaining in court why his actions were laudable \u2014 not criminal.\u201d\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
