Perhaps it\u2019s because the summer sun is upon us and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> activity is more possible in the masked COVID-19 era when it\u2019s warm out. The <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> quality of the films debuting in June 2020, however, actually looks greater than the output of the past couple of months.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the state of the film industry is still in flux. Distributors and marketers of previously scheduled theatrical releases are mostly unsure of what will land well on VOD, streaming, and the \u201cvirtual cinemas\u201d that have begun to pop up. Many continue to push release dates into late 2020 or 2021, the latter becoming a more popular trend.<\/p>\n<p>But if cinemas are actually on track to re-open in July with a new Russell Crowe thriller followed by Christopher Nolan\u2019s hotly anticipated <em>Tenet<\/em>, then June might be the last month of major distributors eyeing the straight-to-VOD strategy for their big titles, like the latest comedy from <strong>Judd Apatow<\/strong> or a Sundance sensation from <strong>Josephine Decker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For now, that\u2019s the sort of thing we can still expect to see commercially premiering at home. Find those films and more highlights below ahead of our calendar of June VOD release dates.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"June_12th\"><\/span><strong>June 12th<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>This is strictly a VOD column, but June 12th has become quite a busy release date \u2014 it almost feels like we\u2019re in a normal summer movie season \u2014 so we have to point out some of the big competing streaming titles as well. Namely ex-theatrical releases <strong><em>Artemis Fowl <\/em><\/strong>and Spike Lee\u2019s <strong><em>Da 5 Bloods<\/em><\/strong>, which arrive exclusively on Disney  and Netflix, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Most importantly for this column\u2019s focus, though, Judd Apatow\u2019s <strong><em>The King of Staten Island <\/em><\/strong>comes out as a premium rental (the $19.99 kind). It\u2019s the filmmaker\u2019s first fiction effort as a director since 2015\u2019s <em>Trainwreck <\/em>and is more or less a loose <strong>Pete Davidson <\/strong>biopic. Needless to say, it should be pretty damn funny.<\/p>\n<p>Funny enough to draw viewers away from the streaming outlets\u2019 offerings? Unfortunately, there won\u2019t really be an easy way to determine if <em>The King of Staten Island<\/em> is the king of the June 12th releases like theatrical box office figures would have.<\/p>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Liberation_of_Women\"><\/span><strong>The Liberation of Women<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The two releases that excite me the most this month are writer-director <strong>Shannon Murphy<\/strong>\u2019s debut feature, <strong><em>Babyteeth<\/em><\/strong>, and Josephine Decker\u2019s surreal, boundary-breaking biopic \u2014 if it can even be called that \u2014 <strong><em>Shirley<\/em><\/strong>. Both films are focused on women in completely different difficult situations.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>Babyteeth<\/em>, <strong>Eliza Scanlen<\/strong> plays a teenager who has just been diagnosed with cancer, which obviously sounds devastating. But Murphy\u2019s style is so utterly unique and refreshing that it matches every tear with laughter or awe. In other words, this isn\u2019t a <em>Lorenzo\u2019s Oil <\/em>kind of situation where her parents (<strong>Essie Davis <\/strong>and <strong>Ben<\/strong> <strong>Mendelsohn<\/strong>) weep uncontrollably for two hours. In fact, it\u2019s just the opposite. It\u2019s a beautiful display of a young woman\u2019s realization of who she is, what beauty means, what the dead say, and other profound abstractions about life and love.<\/p>\n<p><em>Babyteeth<\/em> plays out more like an examination of every family member\u2019s deeply seeded issues, and parent-child relationships are more like mutual friendships. But, as it goes, there\u2019s a boy who makes things more difficult. And <strong>Toby Wallace <\/strong>picked up a newcomer award at the film\u2019s Venice Film Festival premiere for his performance in the role. Speaking of awards, we not only named it one of the best fall festival films of 2019 but also gave it a special honor of our own.<\/p>\n<p><em>Shirley<\/em>, on the other hand, is a chaotic romp through the writing processes of famed horror writer Shirley Jackson. <strong>Elisabeth Moss <\/strong>portrays the mentally deluged literary giant as she holes up in her house with her professorial husband, played by the perfectly cast <strong>Michael Stuhlbarg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Rounding out the principal cast are <strong>Logan Lerman <\/strong>and <strong>Odessa Young <\/strong>as young academics staying with the crazy couple. Naturally, Shirley takes a liking to Rose (Young). The closer they become, the more invested Shirley becomes in Rose\u2019s liberation, and the film shifts from vile and thrilling to romantic and sensuous. The result is one of the unparalleled wonders of 2020 cinema so far.
