\n An apparent Nazi salute was just an example of \u201crampant\u201d anti-Semitism in baseball, according to a former player.<\/p>\n

Oakland Athletics bench coach Ryan Christenson has apologized for raising his arm straight out Thursday in what appeared to resemble a Nazi salute during a postgame<\/a> celebration, but Cody Decker says it\u2019s not necessarily anything new.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean the amount of Nazis jokes I\u2019ve dealt with throughout my entire career is pretty staggering,\u201d Decker, who is Jewish, told TMZ Sports.<\/p>\n

Decker, 33, was drafted by the Padres in 2009 and spent most of his career in the minor leagues before retiring in 2019. He also twice represented Team Israel during the World Baseball Classic.<\/p>\n

While Christenson said his salute \u201cunintentionally resulted in a racist and horrible salute that I do not believe in,\u201d it was an all-too-familiar situation for Decker.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you think anti-Semitism is not rampant throughout baseball!? \u2026 It\u2019s a very, very, very Christian sport and not all of the players that are very, very Christian are the brightest of Christians,\u201d Decker said. \u201cThat\u2019s not knocking Christianity by any stretch of the imagination, I\u2019m just telling you what I\u2019ve dealt with throughout my career by being called multiple Jewish slurs by fans, by teammates.\u201d<\/p>\n

The A\u2019s called Christenson\u2019s \u201coffensive\u201d and said they do not support \u201cthe racist sentiment behind it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 46-year-old former outfielder said it was a byproduct of the COVID-19 restrictions in the game, with handshakes or high-fives being replaced by elbow bumps, but knows he was in the wrong.<\/p>\n

Decker said he believes a suspension would be fair for Christenson, who was not publicly penalized by the team.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like him to educate himself on the situation, understanding why this is so offensive, why this isn\u2019t funny to people like me and honestly players like me,\u201d Decker said. \u201cLet him know what I\u2019ve been through that\u2019s he\u2019s never been through and what my family\u2019s been through that his family luckily didn\u2019t have to go through and why this is unacceptable.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
