Inside the ring, his auspicious career was accelerating, bringing him to the cusp of boxing supremacy. Residing in downtown Dallas, Spence\u2019s daily life was fast, was loud, was restless, finding himself constantly occupied by someone, or something. His stardom was quickly reaching new highs, making him one of the sport\u2019s most valued, and lucrative, fighters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the surface, Spence, who was born on Long Island before moving to Dallas and still has family  in the area, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared fast-tracked for all-time greatness, well on his way to capturing some of boxing\u2019s most sought-after accolades. Reflecting back on that period of time now, as he prepares for his world title unification bout with Yordenis Ugas in the main event at AT&amp;T Stadium on Saturday (7 p.m., Showtime PPV), Spence realizes he was moving too fast in all aspects of his life.<\/p>\n<p>And it nearly cost him his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After representing the United States at the 2012 Olympics, Spence, now 32, catapulted his way through the welterweight division, winning his first 26 fights while knocking out 21 of his opponents in the process. He made a statement against IBF belt holder Kell Brook \u2013 on Brook\u2019s home turf in England \u2013 stopping the champion in the 11th round to earn his first world title. Before he could continue adding to his increasingly elite resume, however, he was forced to take a step back.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just a few weeks after his thrilling victory over Porter, Spence crashed his Ferrari in a single-vehicle accident in Dallas during the early hours of October 10, 2019. He had been drinking earlier in the night, and was charged with a DWI.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m kind of, I\u2019m not happy it happened, but I\u2019m kind of gracious it happened because it made me slow down and put a lot of things in front of me and just sort out what I want and what I don\u2019t want,\u201d Spence told The Post.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>According to Dallas police, Spence was <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a>ing at a high rate of speed when he veered over the center <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n and into the opposite lanes. His car flipped multiple times, ejecting Spence, who wasn\u2019t wearing a seatbelt, from the vehicle. He was rushed to a local hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence was treated for facial lacerations and damage to his teeth, but somehow escaped without any broken bones or serious injury. Luckily, the only thing permanent from his potentially-devastating accident was a new outlook on life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it affected me [for the] better, lifewise, because it just slowed me down a little bit and just made me put a lot of things in perspective,\u201d Spence said. \u201cIt made me realize I\u2019m in a blessed position and basically made me stop taking life for granted, or things that I did take for granted, and thinking that I was Superman.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What Spence wanted inside the ring had become clear \u2013\u00a0to win all four major belts and become undisputed champion of the world at welterweight. Outside the ring, he had goals for starting a family, being a father, and uplifting people around him. To realize that vision, Spence knew a change in his life was needed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence left the fast-paced city life behind him, purchasing a roughly 60-acre ranch just south of Dallas in DeSoto, Texas. He named one of his horses, whom he got on the anniversary of the crash, Ferrari. It\u2019s a constant reminder of just how fragile life can be. He treasures the extra quiet, and serenity, life on the ranch has brought him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted somewhere I could go [that is] quiet, be in my thoughts, somewhere slower, not fast, and basically just chill,\u201d Spence said. \u201cNot everybody in your business. When you\u2019re downtown, living in high-rises, you have to see people, talk to people, and people see you all the time, when you don\u2019t really want to be seen. Out here, people mind their business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt gave people less access to me, because if you really wanna come out here, then you <em>really <\/em>wanna come out here, so it gave a lot of people less access. It\u2019s just a more conservative life, where you\u2019re just chilling. I can go outside on my front yard and just sit on the bench and just relax and watch my kids play, watch them play on the swings, or if they want to go swimming they can go swimming. Living downtown you couldn\u2019t do all that. I had to go 20-something floors down to go walking around, or my kids can\u2019t play in the area because there\u2019s nothing but concrete and streets. I feel like it\u2019s a better overall life for a family man.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"\/>\n<p>Speaking with a laid-back, Texas accent that never seems to get too excited or too bothered, it\u2019s easy to see why Spence is able to handle adversity so well. He carries a sedate, easygoing charisma that seems unflappable, regardless of what is thrown his way. It\u2019s a stark contrast to his relentless demeanor inside the ring.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After he recovered from the car accident, an emotional victory over Danny Garcia in his first fight back \u2013\u00a0retaining the IBF and WBC titles in the process \u2013 lined up a title unification mega-fight with WBA title holder, and boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao. Just over a week before the fight, however, Spence was forced to pull out after suffering a retinal detachment\/break in his left eye during training.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he had to sit at home and watch his opponent on Saturday, Ugas, stun Pacquiao and capture the WBA world title. Spence has been outspoken, despite having just one fight in two-and-a-half years, that he\u2019s \u201cthe big fish\u201d in the welterweight division, that he calls the shots, that he\u2019s the best.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not that he thinks [he\u2019s the best], he knows he is,\u201d Spence\u2019s longtime trainer, Derrick James, told The Post. \u201cThe reason why he knows is because he earned it \u2013 the level of competition he\u2019s faced, the victories that he\u2019s had, and the way he\u2019s been able to draw. It\u2019s why, as he returns to the ring, he returns to one of the premier venues in the country, fighting in front of his hometown fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If he wins, which Spence guarantees, he will leave with three of the four major belts in his possession, setting up a long-awaited bout with WBO title holder Terrance Crawford for all four belts and undisputed status. If it\u2019s up to him, Spence will get that chance as soon as he can.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Spence promises he\u2019s not overlooking Ugas or getting ahead of himself.
