It follows the adventures of Captain Pike, Spock, and the crew of the starship <em>Enterprise<\/em> as they explore the galaxy years before the voyages of James T. Kirk and company.\u00a0It premieres on Paramount+ on May 5th.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re new to <em>Star Trek<\/em>, I recommend going into this <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> knowing as little as possible. That\u2019s because <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> shares the same premise as\u00a0<em>Star Trek: The Original Series<\/em>:\u00a0The crew of the\u00a0<em>Enterprise<\/em> exploring strange new worlds. In theory, you can jump in and discover <em>Star Trek Universe<\/em> fresh.\u00a0This will allow you to enjoy the show without the baggage of 55 years of back story. Because, even though <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> shares the same premise as<em>\u00a0the Original Series<\/em>, it\u2019s technically a spin-off of <em>Discovery<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the first episode of the second season, Captain Pike assumes command of the <em>Discovery<\/em> after the <em>Enterprise<\/em> suffers a critical systems failure. The season follows Pike and the <em>Discovery<\/em> crew as they investigate seven red signals that mysteriously appear throughout the galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have time to watch the entire 14-episode season, you can hit the highlights that delve into the characters featured in <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em>. Kirk. His adventures remained largely unknown until he appeared in <em>Discovery<\/em> season two. The only glimpse of Captain Pike seen in classic <em>Star Trek<\/em> is depicted in the franchise\u2019s first two-part story: \u201c<strong>The Menagerie Parts I &amp; II<\/strong>.\u201d These two episodes recycled footage from the series\u2019 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbr.com\/star-trek-why-nbc-rejected-cage\/\">original failed pilot<\/a>: \u201cThe Cage,\u201d featuring Jeffrey Hunter as Captain Pike.<\/p>\n<p>While you can watch \u201cThe Cage\u201d as a standalone episode, it\u2019s not a part of <em>The Original Series<\/em>. Gene Roddenberry and company made many changes to the series before the second pilot <strong>\u201cWhere No Man Has Gone Before\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0was commissioned. So, I recommend that you stick with \u201cThe Menagerie\u201d to understand the events of \u201cThe Cage\u201d in their intended\u00a0context. But, you can go back and watch \u201cThe Cage\u201d later on if you feel like you can\u2019t get enough of Jeffrey Hunter\u2019s Captain Pike.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Captain Pike appears in Kelvin Timeline movies <strong><em>Star Trek\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(2009) and <strong><em>Star Trek: Into Darkness<\/em><\/strong>. And like Pike, we knew nothing about her outside her appearances in those episodes until <em>Discovery<\/em> season two, when Rebecca Romijn assumed the role.<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u00a0\u201cThe Menagerie\u201d and <em>Discovery<\/em> season two, Una shows up in two episodes of <em>Star Trek: Short Treks<\/em>: <strong>\u201cQ&amp;A<\/strong>\u201d and \u201c<strong>Ask Not<\/strong>.\u201d Both of which are decent primers for Romijn\u2019s take on the character.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spock_Science_Officer\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Spock: Science Officer<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114620 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/04\/b457a33b.jpg\" alt=\"Ethan Peck as Spock\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-credittext=\"Paramount+\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Of all the characters in <em>Star Trek<\/em>, the life and times of Spock have been most thoroughly detailed. From his assignment on the <em>Enterprise\u2019<\/em>s historic five-year mission in <em>The Original Series<\/em> to his death, rebirth, and continued adventures in the <strong>1979-1991 film series<\/strong>, through his later pursuits as depicted in <em>Star Trek: The Next Generation<\/em> episodes \u201c<strong>Unification Parts I &amp; II<\/strong>\u201c<em>,\u00a0<\/em>and his ultimate fate in the Kelvin Timeline trilogy \u2013 most notably in <em>Star Trek<\/em> (2009).<\/p>\n<p>Of course, almost all the episodes mentioned in this article will feature Spock in one way or another. However, if you want a taste of classic Spock from around the period of <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em>, I recommend three episodes that capture the essence of the character. \u201c<strong>Journey to Babel<\/strong>,\u201d which first introduces Spock\u2019s family. \u201c<strong>Amok Time<\/strong>,\u201d where we get deeper insights into Vulcan culture. He\u2019s an Aenar, and that\u2019s all we know. Fans of classic <em>Star Trek<\/em> recognize Aenars as eerily similar to Andorians. But even superfans could be forgiven for not recalling what Aenars are (I had to look it up myself). They are a sub-species of Andorians portrayed in a three-part story arc in the fourth season of <em>Star Trek: Enterprise<\/em>. Chiefly due to the eerily similar name she shares with <em>Star Trek<\/em> supervillain Khan Noonien Singh (note the added hyphen to La\u2019an\u2019s surname). The connection between the characters isn\u2019t clear, but I suspect they\u2019ll become so throughout the first season. So, it\u2019s worth brushing up on Kahn\u2019s character in <em>The Original Series<\/em> episode \u201c<strong>Space Seed<\/strong>\u201d as well as the 1982 film <strong><em>Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn<\/em><\/strong>, and the Kelvin Timeline movie <em>Star Trek: Into Darkness<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Side note (and Kahn spoilers): \u201cSpace Seed\u201d establishes that Khan Noonien Singh was a super-human tyrant created through genetic engineering during Earth\u2019s\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/memory-alpha.fandom.com\/wiki\/Eugenics_Wars\">Eugenics Wars<\/a>\u00a0in the 1990s, after which humanity banned genetic experimentation.\u00a0<em>Star Trek: Enterprise\u00a0<\/em>continues this story thread with a three-episode arc.\u00a0In \u201c<strong>Borderland<\/strong>,\u201d \u201c<strong>Cold Station 12<\/strong>,\u201d and \u201c<strong>The Augments,<\/strong>\u201d Arik Soong (ancestor of Noonian Soong, Data\u2019s creator) illegally continues the experimentation that gave rise to Kahn, hoping to prove that such endeavors won\u2019t always lead to disaster. The events of this story may hold some clues to how a Noonien Singh made it into 23rd century Starfleet before Kahn is introduced in \u201cSpace Seed.\u201d And if they don\u2019t, they may well play into what\u2019s currently happening in\u00a0<em>Star Trek: Picard<\/em>\u00a0season two\u2014but for\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/entertainment\/star-trek\/brent-spiner-latest-soong-character\/\">other reasons<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ortegas_Pilot\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_9\">Ortegas: Pilot<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<figure style=\"width: 1920px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-114623 size-full\" data-pagespeed-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.reviewgeek.com\/p\/uploads\/2022\/04\/0f35d1b9.jpg\" alt=\"Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" data-credittext=\"Paramount+\" src=\"\/pagespeed_static\/1.JiBnMqyl6S.gif\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Paramount+<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The final original character in the main cast of <em>Strange New Worlds<\/em> is Ortegas. No further information is available.<\/p>\n<p>But there are two\u00a0stories\u00a0from\u00a0<em>The Next Generation\u00a0<\/em>that deal with her character type.\u00a0In \u201c<strong>The First Duty,<\/strong>\u201d hot-shot pilot Nick Locarno and Wesley Crusher are involved in a tragic training accident resulting in the death of a fellow Starfleet cadet. And \u201c<strong>Lower Decks<\/strong>,\u201d explores the lives of newly minted Starfleet officers as they navigate their early careers on the <em>Enterprise<\/em>.
