The couple struggle to escape their hellish urban environment, but fate isn\u2019t on their side.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>REVIEW:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The seventies represented a golden decade for filmmaking, spawning some of the most important and personal works ever committed to celluloid. <em>Taxi Driver<\/em>, <em>The Exorcist<\/em>, <em>Star Wars, El Topo<\/em> and <em>A Clockwork Orange<\/em> represent a smattering of the greatness created by a vanguard of auteur filmmakers. On the downside, the seventies also gave us<em> Zabriskie Point<\/em> (1970) and <em>Zardoz<\/em> (1974) so unsupervised auteurism isn\u2019t an exact <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a>.<span id=\"more-172730\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Animation pioneer Ralph Bakshi is one of that era\u2019s unsung heroes. That outsider status is self-inflicted, as he\u2019s the very definition of a hit or miss filmmaker. His career spanned creative high points like <em>Fritz the Cat<\/em> (1972), and <em>Lord of the Rings<\/em> (1978) along with the equally praised and reviled <em>Coonskin<\/em> (1975). But there were also noble misfires like <em>Fire and Ice <\/em>(1983) along with train wrecks like <em>Cool World<\/em> (1992).<\/p>\n<p><em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> represents his most deeply personal work, offering a glimpse into both his troubled childhood and unfettered Id. It\u2019s a dark, visually stunning piece of animation that deserves to be seen. Consider it Ralph Bakshi\u2019s <em>8 \u00bd<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172733\" src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"241\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-2.jpg 550w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-2-310x136.jpg 310w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-2-100x44.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Prior to <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> Bakshi had spent years creating children\u2019s animation for Terrytoons, while nurturing a dream that animation could be used to tell visually striking adult stories. That opportunity came in 1972, when he wrote and directed the big screen adaptation of Robert Crumb\u2019s underground comic <em>Fritz the Cat<\/em>. <em>Fritz<\/em>\u2019s radical depictions of drugs, sex and race got it sl<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed with an X-Rating, which should have been box office poison. But veteran exploitation distributor Jerry Gross (<em>I Drink Your Blood<\/em> 1970, <em>Zombie <\/em>1979) chose to wear that dreaded MPAA rating like a crown, proclaiming, \u2018We\u2019re not rated X for nothin\u2019, baby!\u201d It worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>Fritz\u2019s<\/em> creator Robert Crumb loathed the film, but audiences flocked to it, resulting in a fifty-million-dollar gross. The success led to a sequel <em>The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat<\/em> (1974) produced without Bakshi\u2019s involvement. Now a bankable director, Bakshi was given creative carte blanche for his next project, the autobiographical <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172734\" src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-3.jpg 550w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-3-310x133.jpg 310w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-3-100x43.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s lead character Michael, a barely disguised version of Bakshi, lives in a Brooklyn neighborhood that would make <em>Taxi Driver\u2019s<\/em> Travis Bickle squeamish. Michael\u2019s knife wielding Jewish mother and philandering, mobbed up Italian father reduce his homelife to a living hell. Things aren\u2019t any rosier outside. There\u2019s a parade of psychotic drunks, mobsters and hookers along with a local street gang that\u2019s so violent they resort to knifing each other when no other victims are available.<\/p>\n<p>Michael\u2019s escapes his grim reality by watching <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a> and flirting with Carol, an African American barmaid who gives him free beer in return for cartoons. The two strike up a relationship, vowing to escape their urban hellscape. In most Hollywood films this would lead to love triumphing over all obstacles. But Bakshi ignores that convention, sending the couple into a disturbing downward spiral. But here\u2019s the big question\u2014are we watching the actual events transpire, or are we witnessing Michael\u2019s imagination playing out on screen? The answer is\u2026 watch the movie and make your own decision.<\/p>\n<p><em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> owes much to Hubert Selby Jr\u2019s seminal 1964 novel, <em>Last Exit to Brooklyn<\/em>, particularly in <em>Traffic\u2019s <\/em>cruising transvestite character, Snowflake. Like Selby\u2019s novel, <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> has been criticized for its lack of sympathetic characters. Our hero, Michael, starts out likeable enough, but gradually descends into a misogynistic monster, while Carol seems all too comfortable violently victimizing the men who desire her. Michael\u2019s mother continuously attempts to murder his father. That father is so racist that he puts a mob hit out on his own son for sleeping with a black woman. This all sounds horrifying, but Bakshi injects enough humor into this dark void to keep viewers enthralled.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172735\" src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-4.jpg 550w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-4-310x119.jpg 310w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-4-100x39.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\"\/><br \/>While the story is compelling, it\u2019s the visuals that make <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> so memorable. Bakshi is truly the Walt Disney of squalor, and his ground breaking meld of animation, live action and photographs still holds up today. The opening ten minutes is an eye-popping visual tour de force deserving multiple rewinds. Bakshi\u2019s background art and character designs are ferocious, unrestrained and distinctly his own.<\/p>\n<p>But be warned\u2014<em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> contains broad racial and ethnic portrayals that could (and likely will) offend sensitive viewers. Bakshi\u2019s films have always been racially charged, particularly his vicious satire of Disney\u2019s <em>Song of the South <\/em>entitled <em>Coonskin<\/em>. Many critics condemned <em>Coonskin<\/em> as racist, while co<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>n Richard Pryor called it one of his favorite films. I\u2019ve never felt that Bakshi was a racist, but rather a genuinely subversive filmmaker who attacks bigotry by shining a spotlight on society\u2019s ugliness. Heavy Traffic also contains violence and nudity, but if you find any of its sexuality arousing you should probably seek professional help.<\/p>\n<p>This film has always been a bit of a shaggy dog in terms of audiences. It performed well on its original release, despite alienating viewers expecting another bawdy comedy like <em>Fritz the Cat<\/em>. The late seventies and eighties midnight movie craze made it ripe for rediscovery along with <em>Rocky Horror<\/em>, <em>Eraserhead <\/em>and <em>Pink Flamingos<\/em>. But, while <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> could certainly pack New York\u2019s Waverly Theater (ground zero for midnight movies), it was too unrelentingly bleak for middle America, where \u201cDoing the Time Warp,\u201d was still considered outr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-172736\" src=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"550\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-5.jpg 550w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-5-310x116.jpg 310w, https:\/\/horrornews.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/heavy-traffic-5-100x37.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 550px) 100vw, 550px\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Overall, <em>Heavy Traffic<\/em> is a unique, thought provoking piece of cinema that could only have been created in the seventies by Ralph Bakshi. In our modern world of computerized animation, it\u2019s a revelation to see a film painted from a single artist\u2019s brush and psyche. It\u2019s a film you should see.
