Ripple CEO: SEC case is going \u2018much better than I hoped\u2019  &#8220;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/images\/840_aHR0cHM6Ly9zMy5jb2ludGVsZWdyYXBoLmNvbS91cGxvYWRzLzIwMjItMDQvZjlmMGJjODAtMjI3Yi00OWM1LTg3MTMtMjkwZTg5NDQyN2E5LmpwZw==.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content\" data-v-2a0745c6>Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse is increasingly optimistic that the long-running case with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will deliver a positive result for the blockchain-based global payments company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the main stage at Paris Blockchain Week on Thursday, Garlinghouse told attendees of the fireside chat that Ripple&#8217;s defense in the ongoing case was faring better than he expected. <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThe lawsuit has gone exceedingly well, and much better than I could have hoped when it began about 15 months ago.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Live from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/PBWS2022?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#PBWS2022<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bgarlinghouse?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@bgarlinghouse<\/a> sat down with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CNBC?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cnbc<\/a>&#8216;s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ryan_Browne_?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ryan_browne_<\/a> to talk crypto regulation, Ripple&#8217;s global traction and use cases that he sees growing across the industry. <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ouQYhY3B5n\">pic.twitter.com\/ouQYhY3B5n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ripple (@Ripple) <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ripple\/status\/1514674858579398659?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nThe SEC filed suit in 2020 against Ripple and its senior executives Brad Garlinghouse and Christian Larsen for selling unregistered securities in the form of XRP. <\/p>\n<p>The comments come following a RippleNet community lawyer\u2019s announcement that Ripple had secured a \u201cvery big win\u201d against the SEC after Presiding Judge Sarah Netburn <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.docketalarm.com\/cases\/New_York_Southern_District_Court\/1--20-cv-10832\/Securities_and_Exchange_Commission_v._Ripple_Labs_Inc._et_al\/465\/\">denied<\/a> the SEC\u2019s request to reconsider shielding documents under privilege. The documents were related to a speech delivered by former-SEC Director, William Hinman, where he specified that Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are not securities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis case is important, not just for Ripple; it\u2019s important for the entire crypto industry in the United States,\u201d said Garlinghouse. <\/p>\n<p>He added that if Ripple were to lose the case, a precedent could be set that would see most tokens on cryptocurrency exchanges become recognized as \u201csecurities\u201d by the SEC. <\/p>\n<p>This would mean that exchanges can be forced to register with the SEC as brokers and exchanges would be compelled to register the identity of all token holders. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><strong>SEC scores a minor victory in legal dispute with Ripple Lab<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you determine XRP as a security of Ripple, we have to know every person that owns XRP,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s an SEC requirement. You have to know all of your shareholders.
