And more important, the plan ends kindergarten IQ testing and adds 100 kindergarten slots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is how we are giving and allowing our young people the opportunity to grow, to learn, to explore their talent and imagination. We are making sure that no child is left behind,\u201d Adams told reporters and a crowd of cheering parents.<\/p>\n<p>As a New York City Housing Authority kid who entered a public-school gifted-and-talented class in the fifth and sixth grades, I\u2019m elated that Adams and Chancellor David Banks are expanding access to G&amp;T classrooms to all 32 city school districts.<\/p>\n<p>Like many parents today, my mom wanted me and my brothers in classrooms that would not only challenge us intellectually but prepare us to get into good high schools and then on to college.<\/p>\n<p>I made the cut for Bronx <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> despite a miserable middle-school experience (I think I did more fighting than learning). My two younger brothers chose to attend Adlai Stevenson, where they made the college-bound and honors tracks.<\/p>\n<p>Adams is no stranger to the issue of gifted-and-talented programs in New York City public schools.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gifted-talented-2.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"The decision to expand Gifted and Talented programs was met with praise by many city parents.\" class=\"wp-image-21911183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gifted-talented-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gifted-talented-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/gifted-talented-2.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The decision to expand Gifted and Talented programs was met with praise by many city parents.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/John Minchillo, File<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Five years ago, he and then-Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. created a task force designed to push for greater access to gifted-and-talented classes and entry to the city\u2019s elite high schools for kids in minority communities.<\/p>\n<p>As the founder of the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice and the Eagle Academy for Young Men network, Banks is fully aware of how much black and Hispanic kids can achieve when challenged, told that failure isn\u2019t an option and given support.<\/p>\n<p>Education activists like Maud Maron said the decision to expand access to G&amp;T accelerated-learning programs starting in the third grade has raised respect for Banks among many public-school parents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shows that he\u2019s listening to voices that weren\u2019t being listened to before,\u201d said Maron.<\/p>\n<p>Lucas Liu, co-chair of PLACE NYC, congratulated the mayor for putting the educational needs of children ahead of ideology. \u201cEvery family, not just Asian and white ones, wants access to G&amp;T and a quality education for their children.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maron and Liu are right. De Blasio and his chancellor, Richard Carranza, didn\u2019t listen to parents. Fired up by a woke ideology, they were hellbent on dismantling G&amp;T programs, as well as doing away with the specialized-high-schools entrance exam.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/banks-adams.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Adams and Schools Chancellor David Banks are going to expand Gifted and Talented programs to all 32 city school districts.\" class=\"wp-image-21911193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/banks-adams.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/banks-adams.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/banks-adams.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Adams and Schools Chancellor David Banks are going to expand Gifted and Talented programs to all 32 city school districts.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Robert Miller<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While neither de Blasio nor Carranza remains on the scene, we still have city Comptroller Brad Lander to pick up the virtue-signal baton.<\/p>\n<p>On cue, Lander released a statement ripping the Adams plan as \u201csegregating\u201d and leading to \u201cracial segregation\u201d \u2014 in the first paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cScaling up a program which separates students, often along lines of class and race, is a retrograde approach that does nothing to improve quality education for the overwhelming majority of our students,\u201d Lander huffed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, our still wet-behind-the-ears comptroller is silent about improving the education outcomes for the vast majority of black and Hispanic students trapped in perennially low-performing neighborhood public schools that are 90% to 100% minority.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sure Lander would stare blankly if asked why for many years pre-pandemic\u00a0<em>none<\/em>\u00a0of the eighth-grade kids in the Bronx\u2019s District 7 scored at Level 4, the highest mark on the state English exam.<\/p>\n<p>Yet like so many progressives, Lander alleges that predominantly black, high-performing charter schools are \u201csegregated\u201d and cherry-pick their students. <\/p>\n<p>No, Brad. That\u2019s just black parents able to exercise choice about where their children are going to be properly educated. Heck, some of these critics denounce it as \u201cwhite supremacist\u201d thinking. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the contrary, they don\u2019t want any standards \u2014 for my kids or your kids. They peddle nonsense about equal outcomes being the test of equity. Fortunately, New York families and students who care about access to a quality education have Mayor Adams and Chancellor Banks in their corner.<\/p>\n<p>But neither man can afford to rest on the laurels after Thursday\u2019s announcement. They still have the difficult task of improving teaching and learning for the vast majority of kids attending city public schools.<\/p>\n<p>Truthfully, students highly proficient in reading, math, science and writing, by and large, will be OK. Doing something to aid the supermajority of black and Hispanic kids struggling to perform at grade level year after year is where the rubber meets the road \u2014 in the form of United Federation of Teachers president Michael Mulgrew and his opposition to accountability \u2014 for Team Adams.<\/p>\n<p>I expect to cheer those efforts, too.<\/p>\n<p><em>Michael Benjamin is a member of The Post\u2019s editorial board.<\/em>\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
