\n The protester accused of shouting in a cop\u2019s ear with a high-power bullhorn \u2014 and who forced cops to retreat after they tried to arrest him for it\u00a0\u2014 now faces up to seven years prison on felony assault charges.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a statement Saturday defending Commissioner Dermot Shea ordering his tactical-gear clad officers to end the Hells Kitchen standoff by leaving, a move that had outraged cops and their union reps.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommissioner Shea made the right decision to call off the operation,\u201d de Blasio said. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAssaulting an officer is unacceptable and will always lead to consequences, but arrests must be made properly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Protester Derrick Ingram, 28, remained in custody Saturday pending his arraignment in the June 14 assault.<\/p>\n

The charges say he \u201cplaced the megaphone against the officer\u2019s ear and yelled\u201d after the cop tried to stop him from entering a \u201cfrozen zone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Photos of the massive, battery-powered bullhorn show it was black with a \u201cDEFUND THE POLICE\u201d sticker slapp<\/a>ed on its side.<\/p>\n

Ingram \u2014 who heads a Black Lives Matter protest group that bills itself on its Instagram page as \u201ca collective of non-violent activists\u201d \u2014\u00a0 turned himself in early Saturday at Midtown North precinct, accompanied by a crowd of fellow protesters.<\/p>\n

He had made headlines Friday during a heated standoff at his West 45th Street apartment.<\/p>\n

As cops in tactical gear surrounded the building, Ingram remained inside, live-streaming out his window and conferring with his lawyers by phone.<\/p>\n

Police said they had an arrest warrant, but did not show him one, he claimed \u2014 so he stayed indoors as a crowd of angry protesters joined the mob of dozens of cops already outside.<\/p>\n

After six hours, during which protestors shouted \u201cThis is what democracy looks like\u201d and a police helicopter circled overhead, Shea issued the order for the police to retreat, as first reported in The Post.<\/p>\n

City police unions slammed the move \u2014 and demanded Shea own up to what PBA President Pat Lynch termed putting cops \u201cin the dangerous position of backing down in the face of an angry mob.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
