That performance, like the album itself, was something of a victory lap. It was Kendrick cementing his status as the world\u2019s most critically celebrated r<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er on America\u2019s biggest festival stage. <\/p>\n<p>            <i>DAMN.<\/i> could easily have ushered in a rich period of productivity for Kendrick. But, aside from helming the soundtrack to 2018\u2019s <i>Black Panther<\/i>, he\u2019s stayed eerily quiet for the past five years \u2014 an unprecedented gap for someone who could have plausibly claimed the &#8220;Best Rapper Alive&#8221; mantle before going dark.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            The obvious candidate to fill that vacuum is his little cousin, Baby Keem, who had a prime slot at the Sahara tent for his first-ever Coachella set last night. He brought out Brent Faiyaz to perform \u201cLost Souls\u201d from <i>Melodic Blue<\/i> \u2014 his debut studio album from last year \u2014 and went with a setlist that borrowed equally from that album and 2019\u2019s <i>Die For My Bitch<\/i> mixtape, the latter of which the audience seemed to enjoy more. When the opening chords of \u201cFamily Ties\u201d hit, Keem teased the crowd, saying \u201cYou know what\u2019s about to happen now, right?\u201d The roar of approval and anticipation suggested they did. However, Kendrick never showed. <\/p>\n<p>            Alone though, Keem is at his best when he\u2019s turning up. There\u2019s a youthful aggression in his best music that translates well into live performance. He opened his set with \u201cTrademark USA,\u201d the first song from <i>Melodic Blue<\/i>, which follows the trend of having an album opener with an abrupt beat change. Several of Keem\u2019s songs seem built for audience participation \u2014 not quite 1980s call-and-response exercises, but less hermetically sealed than many internet-native rappers make their work today. Chants of \u201cBeat \u2018em up!,\u201d during the beat change in \u201cFamily Ties\u201d seem particularly suited for mosh pits, whether the sunburnt crowd was ready to engage in them or not. <\/p>\n<p>            The strongest run of Keem\u2019s set came when he played a string of songs from <i>Die For My Bitch<\/i>, beginning with \u201cOrange Soda,\u201d which got the biggest reaction of the night from the crowd. It\u2019s the perfect Keem song in many ways: He tests out a number of different flows that all seem inventive and new. It\u2019s lewd and it\u2019s catchy; it\u2019s tactile in a way that few of the songs on <i>Melodic Blue<\/i>, particularly the more baroquely arranged ones, can claim to be. This is an important diversion from his big cousin: Where Kendrick stakes a good deal of his work on the ability to navigate complicated and ornate structures while retaining grit and specificity, Keem is better served when playing an unbridled burst of id. <\/p>\n<div class=\"\" style=\"padding-bottom: 20px; margin-top: 20px; text-align: left;\">\n<\/div>\n<p>            Keem seems inextricable from Kendrick in part because he and his team have diligently guarded his public image, leaving even basic biographical details to the imagination. He appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, in 2019 with \u201cOrange Soda,\u201d a song that became inescapable that summer. His first two mixtapes, <i>The Sound of Bad Habit <\/i>and <i>Die For My Bitch<\/i>, were both handled by the Texas-based producer Cardo, which only confounded fans further. Both were promising but curiously polished for an artist so far out of the public eye, and the mystery was hardly solved by Keem\u2019s inclusion in a \u201cvisual mission statement\u201d for Kendrick and TDE President Dave Free\u2019s new \u201cmulti-disciplinary <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> company,\u201d pgLang.<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-231564\" class=\"content_block paragraph embed triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"media_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"\">\n    <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Baby Keem - Praise God (Live at Coachella 2022)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fhe-BYNi-QA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<style>\n<\/style>\n<div id=\"content_block-231566\" class=\"content_block paragraph text triple_gutter_right triple_gutter_left center_align\">\n<div class=\"content_inner_wrapper\">\n<div class=\"paragraph_wrapper center_align\">\n<p>            If this was the first glimpse into what Kendrick\u2019s post-TDE career could look like, then it would  appear he\u2019s hitched his carriage to the 21-year-old, Las Vegas-raised Keem. Imaginative <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/KendrickLamar\/comments\/pavj2u\/is_baby_keem_johnny_from_kendrick_lamars_xxx_on\/\">fans on Reddit<\/a> have also theorized that Keem could be the inspiration behind the Kendrick lyric from \u201cXXX\u201d about a little cousin named Johnny, who wants to be a rapper just like him. <\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s possible the relationship is more symbiotic. Keem recently shared a throwback photo of Kendrick and him in the studio, presumably working on <i>DAMN.<\/i> more than five years ago. Since then, he\u2019s gotten his first songwriting and production credit on <i>Black Panther: The Album<\/i>, as well as credits on albums from fellow TDE members Jay Rock and Schoolboy Q in 2018. He even has a credit on the Beyonc\u00e9-Kendrick collaboration from the <i>Lion King<\/i> soundtrack. <\/p>\n<p>            Artists have been dismissed as industry plants or the products of nepotism for far longer than pgLang has been around. But the behind-the-scenes nature of Keem\u2019s involvement in work by major stars would suggest he\u2019s a more generative creative force than the hangers-on who occasionally ride their famous friends\u2019 coattails. In retrospect, one can hear Keem\u2019s strange vocal changes in <i>DAMN.<\/i> which was partially on display during his set when we heard him speak between songs in his natural voice, much deeper than any of the ones he bounces between on record.<\/p>\n<p>            Still, Kendrick was an unavoidable structuring absence. So far, Keem\u2019s records have been experiments in style, loose collections of songs from an artist who is clearly still finding his macroscopic vision. Some iterations work better than others, and that inconsistency is hard to hide in front of tens of thousands of people at Coachella, with the crowd\u2019s attention obviously waning during the more mid-tempo portions of the set. <\/p>\n<p>            It\u2019s not surprising, though, that Kendrick has so much faith in Baby Keem. He\u2019s young, he\u2019s hardworking, he\u2019s family. He\u2019s also a natural performer with real stage presence and the ability to execute each of his varied, technically challenging flows in real time. But can he burrow deep enough into any or all of these styles to build a catalog that consistently engages this type of mass audience?
