According to research from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cals.arizona.edu\/news\/why-your-cellphone-has-more-germs-toilet\">University of Arizona<\/a>, phones are ten times dirtier than most toilet seats. That\u2019s pretty disgusting when you consider you would never put your face on a toilet seat.<\/p>\n<p>It makes sense when you stop and think about it. Your phone is exposed to all of the same things you touch, yet most people don\u2019t wash their phones when they wash their hands. Not to mention all the bathroom phone usage. You may wonder if you <em>can<\/em> simply wash it when you wash your hands. That depends on which phone you have.<\/p>\n<p>Many modern smartphones are marketed as having \u201cwater resistance.\u201d Notice they\u2019re not saying \u201cwaterproof.\u201d Nothing is truly \u201cwaterproof.\u201d There are different levels of how much water a device can handle before breaking.<\/p>\n<p>If your smartphone can handle water, it probably has an IP rating such as \u201cIP68\u201d or \u201cIP67.\u201d The second number is what determines the water resistance. Eight means \u201cimmersion beyond 1 meter, seven is \u201cimmersion <em>up to<\/em> 1 meter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Check the manufacturer\u2019s website to see if your phone has an IP rating. If it has a rating of IP67 or IP68, you can certainly run some soapy water over it for quick cleaning. Naturally, you may reach for these to clean your phone. Are they safe to use? Can the alcohol damage the device?<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/en-us\/HT207123\">Apple<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.anrdoezrs.net\/links\/3607085\/type\/am\/sid\/795799\/https:\/\/www.samsung.com\/us\/support\/answer\/ANS00086342\/?sid=ct796658\">Samsung<\/a> both recommend\u00a0using a 70% isopropyl alcohol cleaning solution to clean their devices. The concern people have with alcohol-based cleaners is ruining the\u00a0oleophobic coating on the display.<\/p>\n<p>Oleophobic coatings wear off with regular use, but obsessively cleaning the display with cleaners containing alcohol can speed up this process. That\u2019s only if you are obsessively using them, though. Wiping down the display once a week or so isn\u2019t going to make a huge difference.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond the display, the other parts of the phone should be fine. Again, you\u2019ll want to make sure the device has some water resistance. Alcohol can interact with certain plastics in ways you might not like as well. Certain wavelengths of ultraviolet light (the type of light from the sun) can kill and limit the growth of microorganisms. So should you just put your phone in the sun for a while? Not exactly.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an entire market of UV Light sanitizers. These products often look like mini tanning booths. The idea is you put your phone inside, turn on the UV light, and let it bathe in the light for several minutes to kill all the germs.<\/p>\n<p>The downside to these products is they\u2019re on the pricy side. You can easily <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/PhoneSoap-Sanitizer-Universal-Gunmetal-Wireless\/dp\/B07GZ5PQYZ\/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?tag=hotoge-20\">pay around $100<\/a> for a UV Light cleaner that fits a smartphone. There are other options that are a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/PhoneSoap-Sanitizer-Universal-Patented-Clinically\/dp\/B071KGVLBB?ref_=ast_sto_dp&amp;th=1&amp;psc=1&amp;tag=hotoge-20\">little more affordable<\/a>. When your phone is in the cleaner, it can\u2019t be used, which can be a little annoying too.<\/p>\n<p>In the long term, UV light is probably not as harsh on your phone as water and cleaning solutions.
