Lee Zeldin\u2019s running mate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think, honestly, I think the Republicans kind of get a bad rep with that,\u201d Esposito said, when asked about the GOP\u2019s former opposition to LGBTQ causes and gay marriage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m gay and Republican \u2013 it can happen. It can happen. You know, it\u2019s, and I keep saying this, this isn\u2019t really just a red wave. This is a common-sense wave,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>Zeldin and Esposito<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/video\/rep-zeldin-alison-espositos-pitch-nys-lt-gov-resigns-lkqvuf\/\"> sat down with host Dan Clark for PBS\u2019s \u201cNew York NOW\u201d<\/a> show for the wide-ranging interview that aired Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s part of who I am. I am a gay woman. I\u2019m very proud to be a gay woman. It\u2019s part of who I am and it feels like I\u2019m now in a position to be able to help the people of the state of New York,\u201d said Esposito, who retired from the NYPD\u2019s 70th Precinct as a deputy inspector. I want equal protection under the law. I want my nephews and niece to be able to go to school safely,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to make sure that criminals are prosecuted. I want my taxes low. Clark<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAnd you know, I haven\u2019t, I haven\u2019t really, I mean, there\u2019s always going to be bad apples in every bunch, that won\u2019t sway off of their beliefs and on whatever grounds it is.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Although Esposito would be New York\u2019s first openly gay designated nominee for statewide office, she wouldn\u2019t be the first openly gay candidate to run statewide. <\/p>\n<p>In 1994, Karen Burstein <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1994\/08\/07\/nyregion\/burstein-brings-an-edge-to-attorney-general-s-race.html\">made history as the first lesbian<\/a> Democratic party attorney <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> primary candidate. Burstein <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/buffalonews.com\/news\/burstein-is-winner-in-attorney-general-race\/article_ae7ef7c2-7c3f-58c6-83f1-76ddfec0e787.html\">beat the party\u2019s preferred nominee,<\/a> incumbent AG Gabriel Oliver Koppell, as well as Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes and then-lawyer Eliot Spitzer. <\/p>\n<p>But she was then defeated by GOP candidate Dennis Vacco in the general election, with her sexuality taking a sudden role in the race. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t an easy thing to say back then,\u201d Burstein, 79, told The Post Sunday. \u201cI was a pioneer in that regard \u2014 not necessarily willingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although Vacco claimed at the time he didn\u2019t take issue with Burstein being gay, Staten Island GOP Borough President Guy Molinari <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/archive\/politics\/1994\/10\/13\/anti-gay-remark-sparks-tiff-in-the-molinari-family\/d1c85969-4366-4d92-ab14-7846b528d2ec\/\">claimed she was unfit for office<\/a>, citing her sexuality.<\/p>\n<p>She noted that she faced homophobic slurs at the tail end of her campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an undercurrent of disgust,\u201d she recalled.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"655\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AP20266508013813.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Trump's envoy for Serbia-Kosovo talks Richard Grenell smiles during a press conference after talks with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic at the Serbia Palace in Belgrade, Serbia, Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2020. The gay agenda is not what the left tells you it is,\u201d he told The Post. <\/p>\n<p>He said conservative LGBT Americans \u201cwant freedom, safety and economic prosperity\u201d like other Americans. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be irrelevant. Just look at his voting record,\u201d said Allen Roskoff, president of the Jim Owles Liberal LGBT Democratic Club. \u201cIt is an outrage for Esposito to be on the Zeldin ticket. She\u2019s allowing herself to be used to make Zeldin appear to be what he is not. She\u2019s being used to soften Zeldin\u2019s image.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a state senator, Zeldin voted against the same-sex marriage signed into into law in 2011 by then-Gov. This legislation will have a profound impact on the lives of all New Yorkers.\u00a0I voted NO, but despite my opposition, I am grateful for my Senate colleagues that fought so hard to secure important religious exemptions and other necessary changes to the bill.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Responding to Roskoff\u2019s criticism, Zeldin spokeswoman Katie Vincentz said he picked Esposito as his running mate \u201cbased on her vast qualifications while knowing she was openly gay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelittling Commanding Officer Esposito\u2019s nearly 25 years of public service in the NYPD and vast qualifications to a single facet of her life is as insulting to the gay community as it is to her,\u201d Vincentz said. \u201cThe only thing Alison Esposito has ever been used for is taking criminals off our streets, something New York Democrats are all too unfamiliar with.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/AP22060727745200.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"U.S. Rep.
