\n By his own admission, Jacque Vaughn isn\u2019t the same coach who lost almost three-quarters of his game<\/a>s with the Magic. He\u2019s older, wiser. Better.<\/p>\n

Now back in Orlando \u2014 but this time for the NBA restart, as interim of the Nets \u2014 he\u2019s showing the league how much better.<\/p>\n

Since stepping in for the departed Kenny Atkinson \u2014 and being robbed of much of his roster by either injury or the coronavirus \u2014 Vaughn has held the Nets together and shepherded a threadbare squad into the playoffs.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done a great job,\u201d Jarrett Allen said. \u201cIt\u2019d be hard for me to be able to task somebody with keeping a team, let alone having to bring a bunch of news<\/a> guys in, having to get a lot of people accustomed to the team and to how we play, bringing us into a bubble.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust all the factors going against him \u2014 he\u2019s been able to rally us together, rally us under his system, help us believe in him and believe in the things he\u2019s doing for us \u2014 he\u2019s just done an unbelievable job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since succeeding Atkinson, Vaughn is 5-2 as interim. And despite missing Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie, DeAndre Jordan and Taurean Prince, he\u2019s still 3-2 in the restart, already exceeding Vegas\u2019 win projection with three games left on the schedule.<\/p>\n

Clearly no decisions have been made yet, and once Brooklyn\u2019s season eventually ends Vaughn will face stiff competition for what will be a plum position. But expected Nets candidates Ty Lue and Jason Kidd could both be pursued by New Orleans, according to ESPN. And everything Vaughn has done in the restart will only strengthen his r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s done an amazing job,\u201d Caris LeVert said. \u201cEverybody trusts Jacque in the organization, everyone trusts his decision-making. He\u2019s made several switches with the lineup, how we\u2019re playing offensively, defensively. He\u2019s been great with adjustment and things like that.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely been tough with the lineup we had, with the roster we had, and he\u2019s done a great job of adjusting and being adaptable. The guards really feed off of what he brings to the table. He\u2019s a competitive guard, a competitive coach. He\u2019s played in the league for a while and everyone follows his lead.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vaughn has seemed completely comfortable in his skin as a coach, showing both tactical sense and leadership ability. Both had been in question when he went 58-158 with the rebuilding Magic.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re always introspective in your app<\/a>roach to the game to make sure that you\u2019re doing your part, my part as a coach,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cSo, the challenge is getting this group ready to play.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have some guys that\u2019ve been with us for a long time, but we have a new group that we\u2019re counting on to play minutes. So, we\u2019re going to maximize the talent and maximize this group. That\u2019s the challenge for me, and that\u2019s the challenge I look forward to every single day with this group.\u201d<\/p>\n

He has maximized the talent by fostering a midrange game, stressing ball movement (second in assist-to-turnover ratio in the restart) and putting LeVert in spots to excel \u2014 be it at point Friday or operating more in the post. And the Nets have responded to his social<\/a> justice messaging, like Thursday\u2019s slideshow on voter suppression and the Voting Rights Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve made a commitment to continue to educate our group, and [that] was an opportunity,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cWe\u2019ll keep putting opportunities in front of our guys to grab onto.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Nets will get an opportunity at the playoffs, heading into Sunday\u2019s tilt versus the Clippers seventh in the East, 1\u200a\u00bd games clear of Orlando. They\u2019ll face Vaughn\u2019s old team Tuesday, with a good chance to avoid a first-round date versus Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

But nobody wants any part of Giannis Antetokounmpo\u2019s league leaders, and the Raptors\u2019 blowout loss to Boston on Friday showed signs of vulnerability. Are the Nets good enough to take advantage?<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re a really good team. They\u2019re really good in that team stuff,\u201d Bogdan Bogdanovic said. \u201cWhatever they do, they do it as a team, offensively, defensively and it\u2019s really hard to beat them.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
