With enough signatures, the group can petition the National Labor Relations Board to hold a formal union election for the Grand Central location.<\/p>\n<p>In a post <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fsworkersunited.org\/\">on their website<\/a>, the organizers said they had voted to become an affiliate of the labor group Workers United on Feb. 21 ahead of the signature drive. Workers United is the same group leading labor organizing efforts at several Starbucks stores that have voted to unionize in recent months \u2014 a sign that Apple could soon face similar pressure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGrand Central is an extraordinary store with unique working conditions that make a union necessary to ensure our team has the best possible standards of living in what have proven to be extraordinary times with the\u00a0ongoing COVID-19 pandemic\u00a0and\u00a0once-in-a-generation consumer price inflation,\u201d a message on the Fruit Stand\u00a0Workers United website says.<\/p>\n<p>The Apple workers have outlined specific demands as part of their effort to form a union, including a minimum hourly wage of $30 for all workers, increased tuition reimbursement, more vacation time and research into more robust safety protocols at the Grand Central location.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Grand-Central-43.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Apple store in Grand Central Terminal\" class=\"wp-image-21941399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Grand-Central-43.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Grand-Central-43.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/Grand-Central-43.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Grand Central store would be the first Apple location to unionize if the push is successful.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/technology\/2022\/04\/16\/apple-grand-central-station-retail-union-workers-united\/\">Washington Post<\/a> was first to report on the unionization effort. If the effort is successful, Apple\u2019s Grand Central store will be the first in the country to unionize.<\/p>\n<p>Workers involved in the labor drive told the outlet that Apple has been attempting to dissuade them from forming a union for \u201cmonths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When reached for comment, an Apple spokesperson told the Post\u00a0that the company was \u201cfortunate to have incredible retail team members and we deeply value everything they bring to Apple\u201d \u2013 but the company did not say whether it would aim to support or thwart the organizing effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are pleased to offer very strong compensation and benefits for full time and part time employees, including health care, tuition reimbursement, new parental leave, paid family leave, annual stock grants and many other benefits,\u201d\u00a0the Apple spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>Apple operates more than 270 retail stores in the US and has tens of thousands of retail workers. Workers have expressed frustration that Apple\u2019s surging profits have yet to be reflected in their paychecks.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year, sources told the Washington Post that some Apple workers were using phones with Google\u2019s rival Android operating system to avoid potential spying by their managers.<\/p>\n<p>In December, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AppleLaborers\/status\/1474119772384096271\">some Apple workers threatened a walkout<\/a>\u00a0while demanding better sick leave and working conditions at stores.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Apple has begun to boost some benefits as it competes for workers during a nationwide labor shortage.
