I pushed it,\u201d said Jepchirchir, who earned $150,000 and the traditional gilded olive wreath to go with her Olympic gold medal and 2021 New York City Marathon title. \u201cI fell behind. But I didn\u2019t lose hope.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans Chebet completed the Kenyan sweep, breaking free in the men\u2019s race with about four miles to go to finish in 2:06:51 for his first major marathon victory. Gabriel Geay of Tanzania was second, 30 seconds back, and defending champion Benson Kipruto was third.<\/p>\n<p>Daniel Romanchuk of Champaign, Illinois,\u00a0won his second career wheelchair title\u00a0in 1:26:58. Those who were unable to make it to Boston were offered a deferral or refund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever they want to do, they can do,\u201d Boston Athletic Association President Tom Grilk said. \u201cRun this year, run next year. You want a puppy? Whatever. Kenya\u2019s Mary Ngugi finished third for the second time in six months, following her podium in October\u00a0after the 125th race was delayed, canceled and delayed again.<\/p>\n<p>About 20 men stayed together \u2014 with American CJ Albertson leading for much of the way \u2014 before Chebet and Geay broke from the pack coming out of Heartbreak Hill. Chebet pulled away a couple of miles later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had communicated earlier, all of us. We wanted to keep running as a group,\u201d said Chebet, who finished fourth in London last fall. \u201cI observed that my counterparts were nowhere near me and that gave me the anniversary of Nina Kuscsik\u2019s victory in the first official women\u2019s race.\u00a0(But not the first woman to finish: That honor belongs to Bobbi Gibb, who first ran in 1966 among the unofficial runners known as bandits.)<\/p>\n<p>At Wellesley College, the women\u2019s school near the halfway point, the iconic \u201cscream tunnel\u201d was back after the pandemic-induced absence \u2014 and louder than ever.
