class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h1>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>A labor group that has previously faced accusations of mob ties has filed for a union election at an Amazon facility in northern New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>Local 713 of the International Brotherhood of Trade Unions sent a letter requesting a union election at an Amazon delivery station in Bayonne on Friday, National Labor Relations Board <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nlrb.gov\/case\/22-RC-294068\">records<\/a> show\u00a0\u2014 just weeks after a nearby New York warehouse became the first in the country to unionize.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The proposed Bayonne union would cover 200 workers at a fulfillment center on the Newark Bay that opened in 2020.\u00a0NLRB spokesperson Kayla Blado told The Post on Monday that at least 30% of the eligible employees had signed union cards and that the agency is now working to schedule a union election. <\/p>\n<p>The IBOTU is not affiliated with the Amazon Labor Union, an upstart group led by current and former Amazon employees that earlier this month won the right to represent 8,300 workers at a Staten Island warehouse just minutes away from Bayonne.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the Long Island-based group seeking to unionize the Bayonne facility describes itself as a labor union representing workers \u201cacross industries such as warehousing, supermarket, building services, bus driving, and manufacturing.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>IBOTU has also been dogged by allegations of shady practices in the past.\u00a0In 2012, federal prosecutors <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archives.fbi.gov\/archives\/newyork\/press-releases\/2012\/eleven-individuals-including-members-and-associates-of-the-genovese-organized-crime-family-indicted\">accused<\/a> the group\u2019s former secretary treasurer, Robert Scalza, of being an associate of the Genovese crime family.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter 713<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>While Scalza was working for IBOTU, US Attorneys claimed in court docs that he had a Genovese capo threatened a rival trade union that was trying to unionize a Long Island chocolate factory, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/news\/crime\/ex-union-official-house-arrest-conspiring-mob-article-1.1847219\">the New York Daily News reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Scalza pleaded guilty to extortion conspiracy charges in 2014, according to the paper. He was reportedly sentenced to six months house arrest and required to give up any union job for at least three years.<\/p>\n<p>He <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have returned to the union by 2019, earning a whopping $341,000 as a \u201ckey employee\u201d that year, according to the group\u2019s tax forms.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to The Post on Monday, IBOTU attorney Steven Kern said Scalza was no longer with the union. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember the name, I know I must\u2019ve done something with him in the past, 20 years or so ago\u201d Kern said of Scalza. \u201cSo he did something wrong and he pled guilty and was convicted or whatever and he\u2019s not with the union.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/amazon-32.jpg?w=1024\" alt=\"Amazon union\" class=\"wp-image-21946064\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/amazon-32.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/amazon-32.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2022\/04\/amazon-32.jpg?quality=75&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The Bayonne, New Jersey effort is not affiliated with the Amazon Labor Union, which recently won a union election at a warehouse in Staten Island. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">REUTERS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scalza isn\u2019t the only former union executive who\u2019s been accused of corruption. <\/p>\n<p>In 2003, IBOTU\u2019s then-president Peter Hasho was indicted for allegedly playing a role in a plot to steal $350,000 from a union welfare fund in Jersey City through a no-show job, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/c4a20e9cca090df5dff133574471168d\">the Associated Press reported<\/a>. However, a jury later cleared Hasho in the case, court papers show. <\/p>\n<p>Before he worked as the union\u2019s president, Hasho was also arrested and arraigned in 1975 in a separate alleged union bribery scheme, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1975\/12\/19\/archives\/7-accused-of-plotting-to-extort-money-for-sweetheart-pacts.html\">the New York Times reported<\/a>, although the outcome from that case is unclear from available court archives. <\/p>\n<p>According to tax filings, Hasho recently served as the union\u2019s \u201cPres Emeritus\u201d and took home compensation worth more than $1 million in 2018 and $810,000 in 2019 before he died in September 2021.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By comparison, the president of the National Education Association \u2014 the largest union in the United States \u2014 took home less than $400,000 in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Asked whether ex-union officials\u2019 records could scare off would-be Amazon union members, Kern said, \u201cI can\u2019t speak to specific accusations.
